When asked, 'What exactly do you do in coaching?' I'll try to explain it in my own words.
Yesterday, a friend asked me,
'What exactly do you do in the coaching you provide, Arisu? Is it different from being a therapist?'
That friend is the type who honestly speaks their mind when they have a question. As I talked to them, I realized that by having them ask me, there are probably many people who are actually curious but find it hard to ask, and I felt that once again.
I get the impression that there are many people who have no experience with coaching or don't even know the word (maybe it's just in my circle?), and I realized how difficult it is to explain it so that people understand. So, I've decided to write this note for those who have started to become interested in coaching or are currently feeling unsure about it!
A therapist is a professional who deals with emotional wounds, trauma, and past pain. They are an incredibly important presence when psychological support is needed.
On the other hand, I believe a coach is someone who, through dialogue, helps you discover your 'true feelings,' the 'self you want to become,' and the 'future you want to achieve,' and supports you in moving toward that.
The back-and-forth of conversation is truly enjoyable. Perhaps you can't reach your own true feelings on your own.
I feel that when you have a direction in mind and want to 'organize your thoughts on what to do,' 'need a push,' or 'want to take action,' having a coach makes it easier to move forward. Of course, people who haven't settled on a direction are also very welcome. Because as we talk, the 'self you want to become' will become clear.
Coaching is not a place where you are 'told the answers,' but rather 'a time to find the answers within yourself.' This is a feeling I truly understand because I have my own coach as a client. Every time I have a session, I discover a new version of myself, and it's a continuous series of being surprised by who I am.
If I, who am almost 60, can think that, then everyone has plenty of room to grow.
If you thought, 'Could this be about me???', please feel free to contact me.
