[Novel] Where the Red Resides
I
The autumn wind blew through the slope after school.
The sky was still blue, yet somewhere in the distance, there was the scent of twilight.
Sota Kamiya shoved his hands into his pockets, listening to the sound of stepping on fallen leaves.
The autumn leaves crunched under his feet, as if he were quietly confirming something deep within his heart.
From the top of the slope, a red coat swayed.
She—Akane Ando—was standing there.
Bathed in the sunlight, her hair looked translucent, and even her cheeks seemed dyed in red.
Hey, Sota-kun.
Hmm?
This slope is going to end soon, isn't it?
Akane's voice was softer than the autumn wind.
For the two of them, with graduation approaching, it was a casual remark, yet it echoed like the beginning of the end.
II
The small tree-lined path behind the library was their secret place.
In summer, cicadas would chirp, and in winter, snow would pile up. But—only in autumn, the world would burn.
Akane had always liked red.
Red is the color of being alive, you know.
Because it burns?
Yeah. Whether you're sad or happy, it's the color of truly living.
Sota pretended to nod and looked at Akane's profile.
The shadows of the autumn leaves falling on her face looked just like her heart itself.
III
The wind grew stronger, and the trees rustled. Red danced in the air.
Akane said,
Hey, even if we're apart—will you remember me when you see this color again?
Sota couldn't nod.
He felt that if he put it into words, something might fall apart.
So instead, he took a red scarf from his pocket and gently wrapped it around her neck.
That's... Sota-kun's...?
Yeah. It's going to be winter soon, after all.
Akane lowered her eyes and smiled a little.
That smile, reflecting the autumn light, was as beautiful as the very last leaf of autumn.
IV
On the day of graduation, Akane did not come to school.
In the cold wind of March, a single red leaf still remained on a branch outside the school gate.
Walking along the empty tree-lined path, Sota looked up at that leaf.
Suddenly, his fingertips touched fabric inside his pocket.
It was the scarf Akane had returned to him.
On it, embroidered in thin thread, were the small words, 'Thank you'.
—With a red thread.
Five (Final Chapter)
Years later, Sota had become a teacher.
Outside the window, on an afternoon when autumn leaves were falling.
In the corner of the classroom where students' laughter echoed, he smiled softly.
On his desk lay an old photograph.
A girl in a red coat laughing on a slope, and a boy looking a little embarrassed.
He put down his pen and looked out the window.
The wind blew, and a single bright red leaf drifted across the schoolyard.
In that moment, he felt as if he heard that voice deep in his heart.
—"It's the color of being alive."
Sota let out a small breath and whispered.
"...Yeah, I'm really, truly living."
And then, the red swayed in the light.
The seasons turn quietly, and someone else's love begins again.
