Moving! Yuzuru Hanyu's "Echoes of Life"
On December 7, 2024, I went to see a live viewing of Yuzuru Hanyu's "Echoes of Life."
That said, I was brought along by my wife and daughter.
My wife has been figure skating since she was a child alongside coaches who are now on TV, so she is knowledgeable about the technical side and had been paying attention to Hanyu-kun even before his senior debut.
Influenced by her, my daughter has also been a figure skating fan for a long time, and the two of them have often gone to watch it together.
I have also been to an ice show where Hanyu-kun performed once, and I certainly felt that he had a unique aura. I remember that the audience's reaction was only extremely enthusiastic during his performance. It felt as if everyone had come just to see him.
In fact, figure skating competitions since he turned professional have been completely lacking in excitement.
Since a live viewing was being held nearby this time, that is why I came to watch it with them.
I had anticipated it before watching, but it was a "work" that was even more moving than I had imagined.
It was finished as a "work of art" that I would like many people to see, something that can be called "art" far beyond a mere ice show.
The style was like a science fiction film, where he himself "narrated" philosophical themes such as "living," "life," and "destiny," and expressed them in that very form through his skating.
Outstanding expressive power, acting ability, and technical skill—there is nothing but "emotion" in this.
This emotion does not come only from his skating. It can be said that it comes from the "message" contained in every single move he makes, not just his skating. He is able to convey a "message" to everyone in the world who is watching. Skating is just a tool, and he has already transcended it.
Ever since I was old enough to understand, I have vaguely thought about what it means to be "alive." Then, after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and after meeting people who have encountered various disasters and touching their memories and thoughts, and in addition, every time I see the natural disasters in various parts of Japan and the difficulties around the world that I feel have been increasing rapidly in recent years, I have searched for, lost, and then searched for and found and hypothesized answers to what it means to be "alive" and the meaning of "living" within the "bioethics" I have learned and the philosophy I have thought about and felt.
If I suddenly turn my eyes outward, in a society overflowing with information that makes us lose sight of ourselves, in a world where we continue to feel both our own pain and the pain of others, what is "life"? What is "me"? I wrote this story and program hoping to provide a hint to such an enormous question.
I don't think there is anything in this world that only I can do. Now that AI and technology are developing, things that only humans can do are starting to disappear one after another.
However, I believe that if it is with the team that creates it and with everyone who watches the performance, that moment will turn into something that only "we" can do.
Together with the world's best team and with all of you, I will skate and deliver with all my heart, soul, and being so that you can have the highest level of experience.
It seems this day happened to be his 30th birthday, and at 30, he showed an unbelievable performance, skating through a program of over two and a half hours all by himself, and even weaving in triple axels and quadruple jumps.
Moreover, he developed this project concept himself and even served as the executive producer, making him a truly multi-talented super artist and super entertainer.
I personally watched his performance for the first time in a while, and I could see that he had grown significantly in both body and mind from a boy into a young man.
He is constantly evolving.
This evolution cannot be achieved without having clear goals.
We can see that in his words about wanting to be a "hint" for those who are "feeling pain" to become even a little more positive.
I am convinced that he will continue to evolve and mature even further from here on out.
