7 Uses for Desiccants

There is usually one small desiccant packet inside bags of snacks and similar items.

Since it says "Do not eat," I used to throw them away immediately to avoid eating them by mistake, but seeing the recent focus on "reducing food loss," I thought, "It's a waste to throw these away too," and "Can I use them for something?" so I looked into it.

The most typical desiccant is silica gel.
It is the kind with blue beads mixed in among transparent beads.

Silica gel is the only type that can be reused many times.

o Placing them in containers with opened pasta, seaweed, snacks, or other dry goods will absorb moisture.

o You can also put them in bags of pet food.

o Putting them in containers of powdered seasonings or salt prevents them from clumping.
However, sugar may clump if you do this.

o Putting them in storage containers for tea or coffee helps maintain their flavor.

o Putting leftover seeds and silica gel in a bag makes it easier to maintain their germination rate.

o Putting them in a medicine cabinet prevents the medicine from getting damp.

(2. Dehumidification and Deodorization)

o Putting them inside shoes after wearing them removes unpleasant odors and moisture.
Putting them in a shoe cabinet is also a good idea.

o Placing them in the corners of clothing cases, dresser drawers, or closets removes both odors and moisture.

(3. Mold Prevention)

o Putting them in camera lens cases or binocular cases prevents mold and also prevents the lenses from fogging up.

o Putting them in storage boxes for memory cards or musical instruments helps prevent mold.

There are also quicklime desiccants found in bags of seaweed, etc.
They are white and powdery, and harden when they absorb moisture.

They cannot be reused multiple times.

(7. Soil Improvement)

o Once they have absorbed moisture, hardened, and become heavy, you can mix them into soil to neutralize acidity, making them useful as a soil conditioner for gardening.

<How to Reuse Desiccants (Silica Gel)>

When the blue beads of silica gel turn pink, it is a sign that they have absorbed enough moisture. You can make them turn from pink back to blue and reuse them by sun-drying, heating in an oven, dry-roasting in a frying pan, or heating in a microwave.

o My recommendation is to spread them on a plate and heat them in a 500W microwave for 2 to 3 minutes.
Please monitor them while heating to ensure they do not overheat.

<Precautions for Handling Desiccants>

o The effective reuse period for silica gel is three to six months, or at most one year.

If it no longer returns to its original state even after heating, it has reached the end of its lifespan.

○ Please be careful not to mix it with food.

○ Keep it out of the reach of children and pets, and be careful to prevent accidental ingestion.

○ If it is accidentally ingested, have the person drink plenty of water or milk.

○ Quicklime generates heat when it comes into contact with water, so be careful not to use it in places where it might get wet.

○ In the unlikely event that quicklime is accidentally ingested, drink a large amount of water immediately and rush to a medical facility.
Depending on the situation, you may need to call an ambulance.

○ When disposing of it, treat it as combustible waste.
