How a Tanka Poet Experiences Music | Songs I Want to Listen to in Summer
When summer arrives, there are songs I want to listen to.
The lyrics are wonderful, not to mention the melodies.
I will write down my own impressions, much like interpreting a tanka poem.
Note that the order of introduction is the order in which they came to mind, not a ranking.
1️⃣indigo la End: "Summer Night Magic," "Toori Koi": Expressions that hint at things.
"Toori Koi" mentions April at the end of the lyrics, but when I listen to "Summer Night Magic," I want to listen to this one as well. The delicate expressions that allow you to even taste the high humidity are beautiful.
2️⃣Genie High "Natsuarashi": A sense of impatience.
"Natsuarashi" has that irresistible atmosphere of the end of summer. I am drawn to how it doesn't view that negatively, but gently accepts it.
3️⃣ back number "Takane no Hanako-san": The imagery of a name.
It scoops up the subtle nuances of the heart in daily life. The proper noun "Hanako-san" is strong, but it doesn't actually appear in the lyrics.
*
The poet Machi Tawara once said something like this. For example, "Hakodate." Just that word alone brings to mind the sea looking down from those slopes. Let's try putting proper nouns into tanka poems too. I plan to go to Hakodate this autumn, so I would like to try some poetic travel.
4️⃣ Sakanaction "Tabun, Kaze.": Not asserting.
An ambiguity that does not assert. Perhaps the use of the kanji "多分" (tabun) instead of hiragana is also leaving it up to the listener.
—White space.
I like tanka with white space, which is why I like this song too.
5️⃣Gekidan Shiki "Part of Your World": Stating clearly, straightforwardly.
Disney protagonists are straightforward. They convey their feelings without hiding anything. Sometimes, a straightforward tanka might be good too.
6️⃣Ringo Sheena "Nagaku Mijikai Matsuri": Contradiction of words and the strength of a single term.
Beautiful and strong Japanese. Archaic language suits things that are passed down for a long time. And festivals are short. Truly masterful. I want to be able to compose a poem with this kind of atmosphere.
♪
The songs I like also had something in common in their melodies.
Melodies that let you see the scenery.
I am listening with my ears, but a photograph clearly appears in my mind. That is not something that can be achieved just by reading poetry; it is because of a beautifully calculated comfort to the ear.
♪
In my tanka, I value as much as possible the sense of speaking through the scene rather than saying it directly.
I've started looking forward to what kind of scenery will move my heart on my travels.
