Flood Countermeasures in the Sasaguchi Area: Discovery of an Unused Stormwater Pipe

A bit of a delayed post.

Last week, I went to the Sasaguchi area.
Following the flooding from the recent heavy rains, I have been working on countermeasures.

During the site inspection, local residents shared their memories with me, saying, "There should be a stormwater pipe sleeping underneath here."

When I actually checked with Niigata City, it was really there. A very large stormwater pipe. It is the red arrow on the map.

We confirmed that we can drain stormwater into it, creating a separate system from the one that currently flows into Lake Toyanogata. The orange color shows the flow toward Lake Toyanogata, while the red shows the structure that flows into the Kuriki River.

We will immediately begin the survey and construction to install stormwater catch basins.

The construction will be completed in time for the rainy season next year.

I believe that once this is completed, the flood damage in the Sasaguchi area will be significantly improved. Although, I am sure adjustments and further consideration will be needed as we proceed.

I realized once again how important the voices of the local community are.

I want to work together with the local residents to build something new.
