The true nature of procrastination is a malfunction of your 'Action OS'
I know what I have to do.
But my body won't move.
Before I know it, I'm doing something else.
I blame myself for doing everything at once only when the deadline is approaching.
Many people interpret this kind of 'procrastination' as:
weakness of will
laziness
lack of grit
.
However, the conclusion is different.
Procrastination can be explained not by your personality, but by a malfunction of your 'Action OS'.
Action is not driven by spirit or motivation, but stops when the OS determines that 'I cannot move right now'.
In other words, not being able to move is not your fault, but a specification of the OS itself.
Today, I will talk about that structure and concrete measures to break free from being unable to move.
The Action OS stopping is not 'laziness'
The reasons why the Action OS becomes unable to move are clear, and they apply to most people.
The task granularity is too large to process
'Creating materials', 'tidying up', 'replying'.
Such 'giant tasks' are difficult for the Action OS to process.
The OS cannot move when it comes to 'things where it doesn't know what to do'.
Danger perception is exaggerated
・What if I fail?
・If I can't do it, my evaluation will drop.
・There is no point if I can't do it perfectly.
The moment the OS determines something is 'dangerous', action stops.
The physical OS is tired
Lack of sleep, blood sugar fluctuations, chronic fatigue.
If the physical OS is weak, the Action OS will never start.
Humans are 'built so they cannot move on days when they are not feeling well'.
Past logs have been overwritten with 'Action = Pain'
・I took action and was scolded.
・I didn't make it in time at the last minute.
・My efforts were not rewarded.
Such memories are 'danger logs' for the OS.
When faced with the same situation, a stop reaction is triggered.
The purpose is vague and the OS cannot make a judgment
Work with an unknown purpose is a 'meaningless task' for the OS.
If there is no reason to move, no action will occur.
Being unable to act is not laziness.
The OS is simply stopping movement for reasons of 'danger, unknown, or inability to process'.
What is the Action OS?
The Action OS operates on the following three-layer structure.
Cognitive Layer (Assigning meaning to tasks)
Difficult, troublesome, scary, overwhelming. If this is misperceived, the OS stops functioning.
Evaluation Layer (Judging priority)
Should I do it now, can it wait, are there risks? If the OS issues a STOP here, no action is taken.
Execution Layer (Whether to actually move)
Action is not a matter of 'willpower' but the 'final output result of the OS'. If the execution layer doesn't move, it's because the OS settings are outdated or the load is too high.
Your procrastination is a sign of an OS error
The more the following items apply to you, the more your Action OS is malfunctioning.
・It takes an abnormally long time to sit at your desk
・The first step feels heavy
・You feel tired just trying to touch a task
・You are waiting for 'motivation'
・You feel strong guilt after procrastinating
・Days when you can move by sheer willpower don't last
・Your concentration is broken by trivial things
・You escape to your smartphone
This is not a personality issue.
It is a sign that your OS is not functioning normally.
Reasons why the Action OS tends to stop
There is always a structure behind why actions stop.
The Emotional OS triggers 'fear' first
Emotions move before actions. If fear or anxiety arises first, the OS stops action for the sake of safety.
You remember action as 'pain'
The more experience someone has of working hard without being rewarded, the stronger their procrastination. The OS judges that 'avoiding it is safer'.
The action environment is not set up
The desk is cluttered, tools can't be found, there are many notifications. If the OS judges it as a 'high-friction environment', it becomes difficult to move.
The goal is too big
Standards like 'doing it perfectly' or 'finishing it all at once' exceed the processing limits of your OS.
As a result, the startup process itself stops.
Environmental design to protect your action OS
To initiate action, organizing your environmental OS is the most effective approach.
Removing physical friction
・Tidy up your desk
・Keep necessary documents in one place
・Turn off smartphone notifications
A 'state where you can start working immediately' places a low load on the OS.
Establishing rules and rituals
・Finish just one task first thing in the morning
・Drink water before working
・Work for just 5 minutes
Rituals act as a 'startup switch' for the OS.
Simplifying the tools you use
Login hassles
Searching through folders
Looking for documents
These 'micro-frictions' are what cause the OS to stop.
Concrete ways to update your OS starting today
Your action OS can be reliably improved through concrete methods.
Break down tasks into extreme detail (the 1/20 rule)
・Creating a document → Just the title
・Cleaning → Throw away one piece of paper
・Replying → Write just one word
Action only occurs in 'minimal units'.
The OS only starts moving through small successes.
A 5-minute ritual before acting
・Set a timer
・Tidy up your desk
・Take a deep breath
・Drink a sip of water
This helps the OS determine that it has 'switched to work mode'.
Condense your purpose into one line
'Why am I doing this?'
If this is ambiguous, the OS will not start.
Condensing your purpose into one line makes taking action easier.
Lower the hurdles thoroughly
Discard the idea of 'waiting until you feel motivated to move'.
Action is determined by 'structure'.
If you lower the hurdles, the OS will start moving on its own.
Maintaining your Physical OS
・Regulate your blood sugar
・Take short naps
・Deep breathing
・Temperature control
If you tune up your body, your Action OS will move more easily.
Keep an action log
・The 1 millimeter you accomplished today
・A step forward
・Areas for improvement
Logging is the 'training data' for your OS.
It rewrites the belief that 'action is safe'.
Summary of today's key points
・Procrastination is not 'laziness' but a 'malfunction of the Action OS'
・Stopping action is a structural inevitability
・The Action OS operates in a three-layer structure
・The Environment OS and Physical OS influence your actions
・Breaking tasks down into minimal steps and creating rituals are most effective
・Anyone can become capable of taking action through OS updates
Greeting
Thank you for reading again today.
You are not weak just because you cannot take action.
Once you understand the structure of your OS, taking action will surely become easier.
Next time, I will cover the 'Decision OS' (the true nature of being unable to choose or constant indecision).
I post on Threads every day, so please feel free to reach out.
See you tomorrow.
