What a high school student who fulfilled all their 'I want to try' wishes taught me
How are you doing?
I'm Yuiho, currently training to be a walking power spot✨
Do you have anything,
that you 'want to try but haven't done yet'?
'You can do that anytime, right?'
Even if it seems that way to others, there are things that take a surprising amount of courage for yourself, aren't there?
The other day, my high school senior nephew came to stay at our house for 10 days.
He will be entering a boarding school starting this spring.
Before that, he came on a solo trip saying he 'wanted to have an adventure'.
On the night he arrived, I couldn't help but smile when I saw him and my daughter writing down their 'bucket lists' together😊
A high school senior boy's 'things I want to try list'
・I want to play at Spo-cha
・I want to see the skyscrapers
・I want to go to an exhibition of my favorite illustrator
・I want to go to Animate Akihabara
・I want to eat at a restaurant featured in 'Solitary Gourmet'
・I want to try ordering and drinking something at Starbucks by myself
・I want to try going to a convenience store late at night
・I want to have a deep conversation with my uncle (my husband)
What did you think while reading it?
I thought,'Is that all you want?'
I thought that (laughs)
But for him, these were all things he had been longing to do for a long time✨
Back home, shops close early and it takes time to get around.
'I want to do that.'
Even when he said that, it seems he was often told 'no' due to his environment or family rules.
So these 10 days were the first time he could freely express what he 'wanted to do'😊
The experience of turning 'no' into 'let's try it'
🌈Starbucks debut
Before going to Starbucks.
Actually, it seems they practiced how to order by watching videos over and over.
'Because it would be embarrassing if I made a mistake.'
When I heard that, I thought it was so cute.
They could have asked my daughter who was going with them, but I think they decided not to. They wanted to do it all by themselves.
These small successful experiences are important, aren't they?😊
🌈I thought they would be moved by a 'late-night convenience store' trip, but...
He went to a convenience store at night with my son and came back.
'How was it?'
When I asked,
'Hmm, it was just normal (lol).'
They said.
I couldn't help but laugh🤣
But this one comment left a huge impression on me.
When you haven't done something,
doesn't it keep becoming something more and more special in your head?
But once you've done it,
'Oh, is that all it is?'
I can think that way.
I felt once again that this 'experience' is what's important.
🌈 Experiencing what is 'normal' in another family
What he was looking for wasn't just fun and games.
It seems he wanted to know what was 'normal' in our home😊
'The ingredients in miso soup are completely different!'
'You don't have to hand over your smartphone when you go to bed!'
'You talk this much during mealtime!'
Even if it's normal for us,
it's a new world for him.
Conversely, I also had,
'I never thought you'd feel that way.'
and it was full of new discoveries.
Wishes don't have to be big
In 10 days, my nephew fulfilled everything he wanted to do and went home.
It wasn't a special trip, but more like he experienced the daily lives of his cousins.
Whether it was Starbucks,
a late-night convenience store,
or Akihabara.
But each one of those things,
I think was a step into an unknown world for him😊
And I thought that adults might actually be the ones who,
'Maybe I should just have the kids do it for me,'
'Is it too late for me now?'
are putting the brakes on trying new things themselves...
So lately, I've been framing things as an 'experiment'and challenging myself with small 'I want to try this' things😊
Is there anything you've kept thinking you'd 'like to try someday'?
It's okay even if it seems like a small thing to others.
If you'd like, please tell me what you 'want to try'🌿
