Stepping into the shop, the snowy scenery outside was replaced by warm sunlight and soft air that welcomed me.

A squirrel, looking a bit aged with some white mixed into his fur, calls out from behind the counter.

"It's probably cold by the window, so please, come over by the fireplace."

From the fireplace came,
Crackle. A quiet, yet strong sound of heat.
Various shades of red as the firewood burned.
A bit of yellow, white steam.

I moved to the spot by the fireplace as suggested.

I took off my thick coat and hung it on a rack a little ways from the fireplace.
I placed my long-haired gloves on the table to the side.

A sigh of relief.

The heat from the fireplace slowly melted away the chill in my frozen body.

When I ordered the daily special,
the music playing in the shop stopped.

"I'll get that ready for you now,
so please, listen to this song in the meantime."

As soon as the squirrel master said that,
a little squirrel? that had scurried out from somewhere started clattering with the jukebox.

In contrast to a moment ago, an upbeat song that is refreshing, very gentle, and yet possesses a certain strength begins to play in the cafe.

The winter sky is clear as if the cold were a lie, and cotton clouds drift by before my eyes.
