The "Same Left and Right Incident" Every New Designer Makes at Least Once
When you work in mechanical design, you encounter parts time and again that look symmetrical but are actually different.
When I was a rookie, I made this mistake over and over.

Rookie: "These parts are symmetrical, right?"
Senior: "Then why do you think there are separate L and R part numbers?"
Rookie: "..."
And then on the shop floor: "It won't fit the other way!"
—It's a classic mechanical design trope.

When you look at them in 3D CAD, they certainly look like the same shape.
But in reality, there are so many cases where they are separated into left and right for a reason, such as:
• The hole positions are 0.5mm off
• The clearance direction for the sensor bracket is different
• The cable routing is reversed
• There is tool space only on the maintenance side
When you're a rookie, you only look at the shape.
But as you gain experience, you start to look at "why is it this shape?"
This is the interesting part of design.

Mechanical design is not just a job of drawing blueprints.
It is a job of giving shape to things while considering everything: assembly, wiring, maintenance, field work, manufacturing methods, and safety.
That is why seniors notice something wrong in an instant.
From a rookie's perspective, it's at the level of "How did you know?", but that isn't talent; it's a massive amount of experience with failure.

By the way, even now, whenever I think, "Wouldn't it be fine if these were the same left and right?", those are the exact parts that end up causing me trouble later.
The shop floor never overlooks a designer's carelessness.
