【通じない英語 #2 】「お胸のメモ」って？？？😱
私の日本語は、ある意味1993年で止まったままです。
日本を離れてから、アップデートがかなり遅れているから。
でも最近はソーシャルメディアのおかげで、新しい日本語を
かたつむり🐌ペースですが、学べる機会が増えました。有り難いことです。
note を始めて2ヶ月ちょっと。
つい先日、初めて見かけた単語があります。
「ブレストメモ」
……はぁ？胸のメモ？？
冗談じゃなくて、本気で意味がわからなかったんですよ。
そして今朝、またこの言葉を見かけてしまったので、ついに調べました。
ブレスト = ブレインストーミング（brainstorming）の略。
えええええーーーー！？
あの、すみません、責めるつもりはまったくないんですけど、
いったいそんな略し方をしたのはどなたですかっ？
もー あやこは泣きたい。
どうか、どうか英語の会話の中で、
日本人の方が “breast memo” や “breast notes” と
本気で言ってしまうことがありませんように。
祈るしかありません。

まとめ
「ブレストメモ」は、日本で使われる和製英語のひとつです。
本来の意味は、
「ブレインストーミングの内容をメモしたもの」
や
「ブレインストーミング用のメモ」
です。
ただし、英語話者には「ブレスト」という略語はまったく通じず、むしろ “breast”（胸、乳房）と誤解されやすい音になってしまいます。
そのため、もし英語で breast memo や breast notes と言ってしまうと、完全に違う意味に聞こえてしまい、誤解や失笑の原因になるかもしれません。
そしてもしここでさらに間違って bleast memo や bleast notes と言ってしまったら… 英語話者にとっては「？？？」となり、お手上げ状態になる可能性大です。（そもそも “bleast” という単語は存在しません。）
私はもう胸肉しか想像できません。
もしもお肉を食べることをやめていなかったら、
この記事を投稿したあとに、KFCに直行していたと思います。
日本語の「ブレストメモ」を英語で言いたいときは、
“breast” ではなく “brainstorm” を使いましょう。

「ブレスト」は日本独自の略語。英語では通じません。
英語では “brainstorm” または “brainstorming” をしっかり使うのが安全です。

Just a couple of months after starting note, I came across a term I had never seen before:
“ブレストメモ” (buresuto memo)
…Huh? A memo for your chest??
I’m not joking—I honestly had no idea what it meant. Then this morning, I saw it again and decided it was time to investigate.
ブレスト = an abbreviation for “brainstorming.”
Whaaaaaaaat?!
I promise I’m not here to judge…
but seriously—who came up with that?
Ayako wants to cry.
Because here’s the thing:
If someone actually says “breast memo” or “breast notes” in English—
thinking it means “brainstorm notes”—it’s going to sound… very, very wrong.
And if you make it even worse by saying bleast memo or bleast notes…
English speakers will be completely lost.
(For the record, “bleast” isn’t even a word.)
At that point, all I can picture is raw chicken breast.
And if I hadn’t stopped eating meat,
I’d probably be heading straight to KFC the moment I post this. 🍗
