iMac is blazing fast with external SSD boot
I previously tried a strategy of booting my iMac from an SD card, but it resulted in a series of malfunctions. Accepting that it was a futile attempt, I decided to try again, thinking, 'Well, what about an SSD?' The result was a huge success.
I decided on the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD
Last time, there were issues with the 128GB capacity and the speed of the SD card itself. I should have realized that before starting, right? To address that, I chose the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD this time, with a maximum read speed of 550MB/sec and 1TB of storage. I can't complain about this.

I thought 500GB might be enough, but considering I'll be using it as my main drive from now on, 1TB is really what I wanted, isn't it? Faster read and write speeds are always better. I agonized over IO-DATA, Western Digital, and Buffalo, but ultimately decided on SanDisk, which has a good reputation and is at the top of its class in terms of speed. There was an option for a higher-tier 1050MB/sec read speed model, but I rejected it due to cost.
It's so fast—what is this!? It's unbelievable.
What is this? It's completely different from when I used the SD card. Even the OS installation speed was incredibly fast. No stress. The whole process, from OS installation to data transfer and settings, which took almost half a day before, was finished in less than two hours.
Of course, I moved Photoshop and Illustrator to the SSD as well. If I can use the original internal HD as an external-like drive, that should be fine.
It seems I made the right choice in picking 1TB after all. If it's this fast as an external drive, Macs with built-in SSDs must be incredibly fast. I wonder what it would have been like if I had taken the plunge and gone for the 1050MB/sec model.
The applications I migrated to the SSD are also stress-free to use. I realize now that I should have done this much sooner. Whether you have a Mac or a PC, if you aren't satisfied with the response time of your internal HD, it's definitely worth a try.
