I went on a 5-day trip to Gero and Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. In this note, I've summarized the gourmet food I ate.
Day 1
I wasn't in Gifu yet, but I got off at Shizuoka Station and had breakfast at "hug coffee." A ham & cheese bagel and a cafe latte for 1,320 yen. It was delicious, but the price was a bit of a surprise. My first dinner in Gero Onsen was Gero milk ramen. I regret that I'm not good at writing food reviews, but the soup was incredibly delicious. If I lived in Gero, I'd be a regular at "Chuka Shubo Toan."Also at Toan, I ordered xiaolongbao. I didn't have lunch, so I had a lot for dinner. It's a trip, so I guess it's fine.
Day 2
On the second day, I worked a Timee part-time job from 10:00 to 17:00, and during my lunch break, I got Gero curry bread for takeout. There's only one in the photo, but I actually ate two (a "Hida Beef Curry Bread" and a "Nattoku Pork Curry Bread"). It was very delicious as curry bread, but can I be honest? I couldn't really taste the Hida beef. That's the limit of my palate. For dinner, I had Gero's specialty, Keichan, at "Ogiya Keichan." I have a policy of trying local specialties, so I ate it, but it's basically just chicken and vegetables stir-fried together. Well, it was delicious, so that's fine. The price was 1,900 yen for a set meal that included rice, a small side dish, and soft-serve ice cream.
Day 3
I found Gohei-mochi at the "Ideyu Morning Market" near Gassho Village. They grilled it right there, so I waited about 5 minutes. 300 yen.Gero Pudding always has a line. After much deliberation, I bought three: "Mellow," "Melon Soda," and "Matcha." 450 yen each (500 yen for matcha). The soft-serve looked good too, but it was cold, so I skipped it. I highly recommend the "Mellow" one. This place is a must if you go to Gero. This day was a food-hopping day without the concept of breakfast or lunch. I was drawn into "GERO GERO BUTTER STAND," which stood out in the Gero hot spring town. A "Caramel Nut" butter sandwich made with homemade butter for 420 yen. It was super delicious. I really want to get better at writing food reviews.Next to the butter stand, at "Mori no Komichi," I couldn't help but buy a frog-shaped bread with tea flavor for 500 yen. I was completely won over by how it looked. At "Yuamiya," where you can eat sweets while soaking your feet in a footbath, I ordered the Onsen Egg Soft-Serve for 470 yen. It's a unique combination of a hot spring egg and soft-serve ice cream. I like both, so I thought it looked good, but I felt there was no real need to combine them. I think it's better to eat them separately.Hida beef meat bun for 500 yen. It's smaller than a 7-Eleven meat bun, so when you think about it calmly, the price is amazing. It's better not to be too calm when traveling.
Day 4
Moving the stage to Takayama, for my first meal, I went to "Masago Soba" at its 11:00 opening for Chinese noodles (regular) for 900 yen. The toppings were simple: chashu pork, bamboo shoots, and green onions. This is what Takayama ramen is. Delicious. It was cold in Takayama, around 0 degrees, so it really warmed me up. The soup is rich. I personally loved that the owner was wearing a T-shirt that said "Motivation switch currently broken." No motivation? But if you can produce this flavor with a broken switch, that's impressive. You don't need a motivation switch. There are many nice cafes in Takayama, and I couldn't decide, but I went to "Hanafuka." Matcha cream shiratama for 1,200 yen. Tasty. It started snowing, so I stayed in this cafe for about 4 hours. I finished reading a whole novel. For the Hida beef sushi, which was a must for this trip, I went to "Sosaku Kyodo Sushi Honpo Kyoushi" at the super awkward time of 16:00. Hida beef assortment for 2,178 yen. As expected, the Hida beef was delicious. This will blow you away.
Day 5
On the last day, I just had breakfast and then headed out. I had the 500 yen breakfast set at Kajibashi Coffee. It was reasonable. The owner, an older gentleman, was very nice. Having breakfast while looking out at the river was also lovely.Due to the long train journey using the Seishun 18 Kippu, I ate these items I bought at the Takayama morning market for lunch and dinner. It had been a while since I last bit into a whole apple. I love the bean snacks from Mamekichihonpo.
That concludes the summary of the gourmet food I ate on my Gifu trip. Overall, the food in Gifu was delicious and it was fantastic. I want to go back to eat Hida beef again.
