[Chef] Gratitude! The Elite of the Storage Room
I am having fresh vegetables survive the winter by keeping them past the new year.
I am the type who wants to do all the shopping by Christmas every year.
Vegetable prices tend to skyrocket during the year-end and New Year holidays and throughout the cold winter.
During this period, the more vegetables I have that can thoroughly satisfy the appetites and health of two people, the more helpful it is.
So, I ran around in search of good vegetables.
I went from supermarket to farmers' market.
(I also couldn't skip a delicious lunch.)
Daikon radish, Chinese cabbage, cabbage, carrots,
onions, burdock root, green onions, lotus root, and
sweet potatoes, nagaimo yams, taro, and so on.
Oh?
Looking back at it now, there are a lot of root vegetables, aren't there?
I wrap them in newspaper,
and let them rest in the storage room.

I make full use of newspaper.
For things that easily scatter like onions and sweet potatoes,
I make bags out of newspaper,
and just pop them in there.
Easy peasy!
A month has passed since they began their hibernation.
The green onions, cabbage, burdock root, etc.
were all finished off early, beautifully and deliciously.
I stored the green onions and burdock root wrapped and standing upright, still with the soil on them.
As for the remaining vegetables...
Being the timid person I am, I can't help but worry about their condition.
"Was 'popping them in' a bad idea?"
"Since it's cold, I wonder if they've frozen."

When I pick them up, they feel cool.
I could also feel the firmness that is proof of their vitality.
The leaves of the Chinese cabbage are also lively!
The onions I just popped in while still in the net are
also doing well!
The daikon radish and carrots stored upright look just like they were bought today! ...That's an exaggeration, though.
Strangely enough, these taste much sweeter when cooked!
Thanks to them, they are very useful.
Thank you for surviving the new year and enduring the cold.
The cold will continue for a while longer.
Oh, 'elite' ones sleeping in the storage room!
Please rest a little longer and wait for your turn.
Wrapping them up again, back to the storage room.
I'm glad I bought them in bulk when they were cheap.
