Empowered Parenting: A Parenting Method to Cultivate the Power to Shape the Future
What kind of parenting method do you usually use?
I recently learned about the concept of Empowered Parenting, so I would like to introduce it to you today.
What is Empowered Parenting?
Empowered Parenting is an approach that balances empathy and boundaries, respecting a child's emotions while fostering independence.
Based on "Empathy + Boundaries", it allows children to experience natural consequences, fostering a sense of responsibility and problem-solving skills.
Key Points of Empowered Parenting
Empathy + Boundaries
While being attuned to a child's emotions, firm boundaries are set for their behavior.
For example, if a child gets angry because their toy was taken and hits their younger brother:
"I understand you're upset, but hitting isn't okay. Let's find a solution together."
("I understand you're upset, but hitting isn't okay. Let's find a solution together.")
Resilience Through Experience
By having children experience failures or natural consequences, they develop resilience.
For example, if they don't want to wear a coat when going out on a cold day:
(Go outside without a coat and ask a question)
"Why do you think it was important to wear your coat?"
("Why do you think it was important to wear your coat?")
Responsibility and Problem-Solving
By having children reflect on their own actions and think about what to do next, they develop a sense of responsibility.
For example, if a child spills a drink:
"What could you do differently next time?"
("What could you do differently next time?")
The Benefits of "Empowered Parenting"
For instance, "non-scolding parenting" is a wonderful approach that is attuned to a child's emotions, but boundaries can often become unclear, and children may have fewer opportunities to learn discipline and self-regulation.
In contrast, Empowered Parenting provides an environment where children can be safe and grow by combining empathy with firm boundaries.
By allowing them to experience natural consequences, children learn resilience and responsibility, acquiring the ability to handle future difficulties.
The role of a parent is not just to ensure the child is happy, but to raise strong, independent individuals who have the power to overcome difficulties.
Through this process, parents can also let go of the desire for control and cultivate the ability to trust and watch over, thereby conveying to the child the power to believe in themselves. Empowered parenting aims for both parents and children to grow together and foster a strong bond.
In conclusion
Especially since my second son was born, I have found myself unconsciously incorporating elements of "Empathy + Boundaries" from Empowered Parenting more often. There is daily learning through small events, such as the children fighting over toys or pushing each other.
This approach is helpful for all parents, but it is especially recommended for those raising children close in age or those struggling with the balance of sibling relationships.
By staying close to their emotions through daily events while maintaining boundaries, the parent-child relationship will become stronger, and it will also help reduce stress.
