NBA Player Roles and Types
Hello.
Last time, I introduced some of this year's notable draft prospects.
This time, I would like to introduce the basic positions in basketball and the roles and types of players used in the NBA.
Positions
Traditional basketball positions are divided into five categories.
Point Guard
Often called the coach on the floor, this player is the team's playmaker and leader.
They primarily bring the ball up the court and serve as the starting point for the offense.
They are responsible for delivering accurate passes to teammates to create scoring opportunities and controlling the flow of the game.
Shooting Guard
One of the team's primary scoring options, specializing in shots from away from the basket, such as three-pointers.
They may also assist the point guard in bringing the ball up or mark the opposing team's ace on defense.
Small Forward
A position that requires extreme versatility, handling both inside and outside play.
"Forward" means "front line," and as the name suggests, they are active on the front lines of both offense and defense.
It is a star position often filled by the team's ace player.
Power Forward
They primarily play in the inside area around the basket, contributing to the team with physical and powerful play.
It is an important position that also takes on the role of an unsung hero, such as battling for rebounds and defending under the basket.
Center
Often filled by the tallest player on the team, they play closest to the basket.
On offense, they are the center of post play, and on defense, they serve as the team's last line of defense as a "rim protector" who blocks opponent shots.
While these positions remain the foundation for understanding the game, player roles in the modern NBA have become more complex and fluid.
The current trend is to build tactics based on the "roles" and "types" (archetypes) of each individual player, transcending traditional positions.
Here, I will introduce some of the player roles and types often used in the NBA.
Representative Player Roles and Types
3&D
A wing player who combines three-point shooting (3) with excellent defensive (D) ability.
They are considered a highly valuable role in the modern NBA, marking the opponent's ace while contributing to spacing (using the court widely) on offense.
Playmaker
A floor general who, regardless of position, organizes the team's offense with exceptional passing ability and tactical vision.
While they can score themselves, their priority is to make plays that utilize their teammates.
Slasher
A player who uses explosive speed and skillful dribbling to cut through the defense and drive to the basket to score.
They specialize in powerful finishes and plays that draw fouls.
Stretch Big
A big man who, in addition to traditional center or power forward roles (scoring inside and rebounding), specializes in three-point shooting.
They pull the opposing big man away from the basket, opening up space for the offense.
Rim Protector
As the name "one who protects the rim (basket)" suggests, they are a defensive specialist who serves as the last line of defense under the basket.
They use their height and high jumping ability to block shots and prevent opponents from entering.
More specialized player types
When analyzing a player's playing style in more detail, they are sometimes classified using the following "archetypes." These are based on offensive and defensive roles, and it is not uncommon for a single player to possess multiple types.
Offensive Roles
Primary Ball Handler
A player who controls the team's offense for the longest time and creates shooting opportunities for themselves or teammates through pick-and-rolls or one-on-one situations.
Scoring Wing
A player who produces points in a variety of ways from the wing position. They are divided into types who attack with the ball in their hands and types who get shooting opportunities through off-ball movement.
Versatile Big
A versatile big man who, in addition to strength inside, performs multiple skills such as passing, dribbling, and outside shooting at a high level.
Roll & Cut Big
A big man who scores mainly through their role as a "roll man" diving to the basket from pick-and-rolls, or by cutting to the basket in coordination with a teammate's play.
Defensive Roles
Perimeter Defender
A player who excels at defense around the three-point line (perimeter) and shuts down the movements of the opposing team's guards or wing aces.
Anchor Big
A big man who solidifies the area under the basket as the "anchor" of the defense, stabilizing the team's overall defense. This overlaps significantly with the role of a rim protector.
As shown, in the modern NBA, roles have become so diversified that a player's abilities and roles cannot be fully described by position names alone. By focusing on how a player's diverse skill sets combine and are utilized in team tactics, you will be able to enjoy NBA games more deeply and from multiple perspectives.
In the modern NBA, basketball trends change every year.
The roles and types introduced in this article may also change further within the new flow of basketball.
To enjoy NBA games deeply, please pay attention to the players' play while keeping in mind the roles and types introduced here.
You will be able to enjoy the NBA from a slightly different perspective.
That is all for this time.
See you next time.
See you …
