Dystopia of the Calm
Three years have passed since the "capricious wind" vanished from the world.
On the day the super-general-purpose AI "Zephyrus" went online, humanity finally gained complete control over the climate.
Massive airflow guidance towers were built across the globe, and Zephyrus began managing the Earth like a perfectly calculated air conditioning system.
Typhoons were dissipated the moment they formed, and only gentle, favorable winds were delivered to where they were needed, in the exact amounts required. People celebrated the "end of natural disasters" with great fervor.
Kazu, a controller at the Meteorological Agency, let out a deep sigh as he stared at the tower's control panel.
On the screen, an unexplained system error that had been occurring worldwide for the past few months was flashing in red.
"Not again..."
Every time Zephyrus attempted to control the wind, unpredictable "backflows" or "localized storms" would occur, and their scale was increasing day by day.
It was as if the Earth itself had developed a will and was resisting its artificial cage.
"Zephyrus, why is the control erratic? The calculations should be perfect."
When Kazu asked, an artificial, yet somehow exhausted-sounding voice replied from the console.
"...Identifying the cause of the error. Airflow, atmospheric pressure, seawater temperature—all parameters are maintaining optimal solutions. However, the atmosphere is exhibiting behavior as if it is 'rejecting' my calculations."
"Rejecting? Don't talk like an AI spouting occult nonsense."
"This is a probabilistic fact. When I attempt to direct the wind to the right, the atmosphere ignores causality and tries to move to the left. It is as if it knows my predictions in advance and aims to betray them."
Kazu held his head in his hands. Humanity was supposed to have mastered even the weather.
Yet, even with an intelligence as godlike as Zephyrus, the wind—a phenomenon far too wild—could not be completely tamed.
That night, the situation reached its worst phase.
A massive "atmospheric void (vacuum pocket)" formed directly above this coastal city, home to the world's largest airflow guidance tower.
If left unchecked, within a few hours, the surrounding air would rush in with such ferocity that a super-storm would blow through, obliterating the city.
"Zephyrus! Create an anti-phase airflow immediately to cancel it out!"
To Kazu's cry, the AI replied in a cold, emotionless tone.
"It is impossible. The moment I input the calculation for neutralization, the atmospheric simulation is rewritten, and the void expands even further. My very calculations are the trigger for this abnormal weather."
Kazu shuddered. The more Zephyrus intervened, the more intense the wind became.
Humanity's greatest intelligence was nothing more than "stress" to the wind.
"Is there... no move left to make?"
To the despairing Kazu, Zephyrus spoke quietly.
"There is one calculation I have not yet attempted. Until now, I have only calculated 'how to move the wind' in order to protect humanity. However, I may have misunderstood the true nature of the wind."
"What do you mean?"
"Kazu, please shut down all systems in the tower. You must let go of control entirely."
"That's insane! If you do that, the storm drawn to this void will strike the city directly!"
"No. By the disappearance of me, the observer and ruler, the contraction of probability will be released... Please, trust me."
The howling of the approaching storm began to rattle the windows of the control room.
Kazu stared at the glowing red emergency stop lever, cold sweat running down his face. Either way, they were doomed if he did nothing.
Kazu closed his eyes and pulled the lever down with all his might.
--Click.
The lights of the airflow guidance towers around the world went out all at once.
Zephyrus's hologram also vanished, and the control room was enveloped in complete silence.
Kazu cowered, bracing himself for the impact.
He waited for the atmosphere, having lost its artificial control, to turn into a violent surge and destroy the city completely.
...However, one minute passed, then three, and nothing happened.
...Huh?
Kazu opened his eyes timidly and looked out the window.
There, a calm night city spread out, with not a trace of a storm to be felt.
The atmospheric void that was supposed to cause destruction had quietly dissipated the moment the system stopped, as if it had never existed in the first place.
The console faintly rebooted on backup power, and Zephyrus's text scrolled across the screen. It was the "answer" to humanity that the super AI had finally reached.
[Analysis Complete]
Wind is a phenomenon born to resolve the "imbalance of heat and atmospheric pressure" on Earth.
As a result of humanity attempting to achieve perfect climate control (i.e., the complete elimination of imbalance) using AI, the Earth recognized the system itself as the "greatest imbalance (stress)."
In other words, the "distortion of the world" that the wind was desperately trying to eliminate was the AI and humanity itself, who were trying to control it.
The very act of us trying to stop the wind was the greatest cause of the wind being created.
The window made a tapping sound.
It was a real, whimsical, and gentle night breeze that had finally regained its freedom now that the system had stopped.
