[Essay] A Single Key
I am going to talk about a manga that I read over and over again.
It is a manga about an alcoholic, depressed manga artist.
It became a topic of conversation online once, so I think some of you may know it.
I reread this manga because I originally liked the author, and because I empathize with the protagonist's way of thinking and the circumstances they faced after becoming a manga artist.
In the manga, there was a story about the differences in how people interpret art and literature.
To summarize, it was about how when people encounter culture, there are those who are drawn to things that are hard to explain in words, and those who are drawn to things that can be understood through explanation. The difference is not a matter of superiority or inferiority, but rather a gap created by what each person has encountered in their life, and there are parts of each other's sensibilities that cannot be understood.
The protagonist and I are the former.
We are drawn to the sense of what lies between the lines and the silent presence of things.
At the same time, I was able to accept that the reason I sometimes have no idea what is written, regardless of my understanding of the worldview or unfamiliar terminology, is due to that difference.
I think the difference in the types of sensitivity is as great as the difference in nationality or religion.
So, how should we perceive these differences?
Unless it is something truly bizarre, I want to avoid keeping the door locked just because we cannot understand each other. There is no fun in gathering only things that match my own scale of sensibility.
On the other hand, if I were to accept everything, I would end up with a bad diet and get a stomachache.
Perhaps it is good for one's health to occasionally lock or unlock a single key.
