Opening Your Five Senses Changes How You See the World
How the five senses develop
~Daily habits to regain your senses~
Have you ever thought that phone calls are mysterious?
Even if you can't see the person,
the moment you hear their first word,
"They don't sound like themselves today."
"Are they a little angry?"
"They're lying down while talking."
You can tell such things in an instant.
The tone of their voice.
The speed at which they speak.
The slightest pause.
Even though these are just tiny differences,
I believe that from them,
we are sensing the other person's state.
Why can we tell such things?
It is surely because
we are sensing much more
than we realize.
In our daily lives, we
look at scenery,
listen to sounds,
smell scents,
taste things,
and touch to know temperatures.
That is how we experience the world.
These are
the five senses.
Sight,
hearing,
smell,
taste,
touch.
Through these five senses, people
are connected to the world.
In my previous article,
I wrote about the sense of "reading the air."
Sometimes people
feel that "the atmosphere is somehow different."
Even though nothing has been said yet,
we might feel a heavy atmosphere,
or conversely,
feel that "this person makes me feel at ease."
When people talk about the five senses,
they often think of them as the "power to feel."
But I
think that the five senses
might actually be
the power to notice.
Even when looking at the same scenery,
there are those who notice the color of the sky
and those who do not.
Even when eating the same meal,
there are those who notice the aroma and flavor
and those who do not.
The world is always
there in the same way,
yet there are those who notice
and those who do not.
I think that difference
might be the difference in our five senses.
And another thing
that I find very interesting is
that people see what they want to see
and feel what they want to feel.
Even with the same scenery,
when your heart is open,
the world feels rich.
But
when your heart is down,
even with the same scenery,
there are times when you feel nothing.
This is the same for food.
When you are feeling down,
even if it is food you usually love,
there are times it doesn't taste very good.
Conversely,
a meal enjoyed during a fun time
or with someone important to you
can taste delicious,
even if it is the same dish.
In other words,
it is not that the taste itself has changed,
but that the self who is feeling it has changed.
The five senses
might not only be for feeling the outside world,
but also for reflecting the state of your own heart.
I also feel this while learning Reiki,
but the human body is very delicate.
Before we understand with our heads,
there are times when the body feels it first.
That is precisely why,
if your physical senses become dull,
it becomes harder to notice things
that you should have been able to feel.
That is why I believe
food is important.
What you eat
directly builds your body.
It builds your body,
becomes your blood,
becomes your cells,
and then
it also influences our senses.
Since I started valuing food, something has changed for me.
When you start to carefully savor your food,
aroma,
taste,
texture,
temperature,
I have come to feel these things
more clearly than before.
Especially when using natural salt,
the sweetness and umami of the ingredients
can be felt clearly.
When flavors become clear,
people naturally start to savor them.
Perhaps natural salt
is not just for seasoning food,
but also for tuning our senses.
So,
when I think about how to nurture the five senses, I feel there are a few important things in daily life.
Habit 1 for nurturing the five senses
Regain the power to savor
Eating is
originally an act of using the five senses.
Aroma,
taste,
texture,
temperature.
Carefully savoring those things.
Just by doing that,
your senses will gradually return.
Habit 2 for nurturing the five senses
Notice the differences
I believe the five senses
grow when you feel differences.
The taste is a little different today.
The air is different.
The light is different.
Noticing such small differences.
Just by doing that,
your senses will gradually open up.
Habit 3 for nurturing the five senses
Listen to your body's voice
We usually
think with our heads too much.
But the body
is always feeling something.
This place is comfortable.
This person makes me feel at ease.
I feel a bit tired today.
Such sensations
might be signs from your body.
And there is one more thing
that I feel is very important.
That is
to have some margin.
On your way to work,
look up at the sky a little.
While drinking coffee,
try to feel the aroma.
While walking,
try to feel the temperature of the wind.
Even in such a short amount of time,
if you turn your consciousness toward "feeling,"
your senses will gradually return.
When your five senses are tuned,
people gradually
start to notice
the sense of "somehow knowing."
That
might be intuition.
The five senses
might be more than just the power to feel the world,
but the power to notice the world.
In the next article,
I will try writing about the sense that lies even further beyond the five senses,
intuition.
