KakeKoi Episode 7 Impressions & Analysis | What Koharu Forgot and the Meaning of "Transparent"
Welcome back. Welcome to the Biwao-chan Blog & Ani-Ota World.
"Have we met somewhere before?"—Koharu Fuyutsuki, whom he reunited with at the hospital, looked at Kakeru Sorano as if he were a "stranger." Episode 7, "Transparent," is not a story about a love confession that went unanswered. It is about being there, yet unable to form a clear outline in one's memory. It was a quiet and cruel episode where the "transparent haze like white" that Koharu spoke of overlapped with her state of being unable to remember Kakeru.
KakeKoi Episode 7 Synopsis | The Day After the Confession, Koharu Disappeared
In Episode 6, Koharu kissed Kakeru, and Kakeru confessed his feelings.
However, from the next day on, Koharu did not come to university, and neither Hayase nor Narumi could reach her. She wasn't just avoiding Kakeru. That is why he could not think of this as a simple case of unrequited love.
Narumi saw Koharu entering the hospital, and Kakeru and Hayase went to look for her. Eventually, following the sound of a piano, they found Koharu delivering a song to the children.
"You were here."
"I'm glad you didn't disappear."
What Kakeru wanted to confirm first was not the answer to his love, but that Koharu was safely there.
The Hospital Piano | The Sound That Told Kakeru "I'm Here"
Previously, Kakeru had guided Koharu to the piano.
In Episode 7, conversely, the sound Koharu played guided Kakeru, who had lost sight of her. It felt as though Koharu, whom he could not find at the reception or near the ophthalmology department, was telling him "I'm here" through her music.
And Koharu is not just a person to be protected. She makes children laugh at the hospital and gives them songs. There are people around her who wait for Koharu's sound.
⇒ The reason Kakeru felt it "wasn't unrequited love" and ran to the hospital, the pain hidden in Hayase's "Go on ahead!", and the meaning of the piano leading to their reunion are analyzed in detail on the main site.
"Have we met somewhere before?" | What Was Erased from Koharu's Memory
"It's Sorano. I'm behind you."
Kakeru states his name as he always does, to let Koharu, who cannot see, know who is speaking.
However, this time, even after stating his name, the time they shared did not immediately return.
For Koharu, knowing Kakeru was not about remembering his face. The resonance of his voice, the pauses when he speaks, the distance when he is by her side, the kindness of asking before holding her hand—that accumulation of moments should have been the outline of "Kakeru Sorano."
Perhaps that is why what Koharu forgot was not just his name.
The time spent laughing on the terrace, the hands touched on a rainy day, the kiss, the confession. Perhaps the thread of memory connecting her to the person named Kakeru has now come undone.
The Meaning of 'Transparent' in Episode 7 | Not Disappeared, but Indistinguishable
Koharu once described how she sees herself as a 'transparent haze similar to white'.
It is not a world of total darkness. It is a world where you can sense that something is there, but you cannot grasp its shape or outline.
Perhaps Kakeru in Episode 7 has reached that exact state.
He is there.
He is speaking.
He ran to the hospital, worried about Koharu.
Even so, Koharu cannot connect who that person is.
Being 'transparent' does not mean disappearing. It means that while someone certainly exists, they cannot be distinguished within one's memory. I believe it refers to a state where the memories of the two have not vanished, but have lost their outline behind a white haze.
What Kakeru Must Face | Do Not Bind Today's Koharu with the Koharu of the Past
Let's pause for a moment.
In Episode 6, Koharu kissed Kakeru. She opened up about her illness, saying she 'wanted him to hear everything'.
However, the Koharu in Episode 7 might not know Kakeru.
At this point, Kakeru cannot press her by saying 'we were special' based on past memories. If he prioritizes the feelings offered by the Koharu of the past over the will of the current Koharu, it would no longer be protecting her.
What Kakeru needs is not just to rush to help Koharu regain her memories.
He needs to ask again what the Koharu of today is afraid of, and who she wants to have by her side.
KakeKoi Episode 7 Impressions Summary | Two People Meeting Again in a Transparent Night
Episode 7, 'Transparent', is not an episode where their love has ended.
It is simply an episode where they can no longer take their accumulated memories for granted. Kakeru will likely not be listing evidence that Koharu loved him, but rather reaching out to her again to show her who he is right now.
'Have we met somewhere before?'
These words do not negate their past.
Is it an entry point to wanting to know him again, directed at Kakeru? Or is it a transparent haze spreading through Koharu's memories? I look forward to seeing what kind of distance Kakeru will stand at beside Koharu in the next episode.
⇒ From the reason Koharu forgot Kakeru, to the overlap of vision and memory indicated by "transparent," and why the kiss from episode 6 must not be forced upon "the current Koharu." I have analyzed this deeply in the main article.
