Emology 11:The Comfort I Chose for Myself
“Oh, I should get going.”
Anna rose from the sofa
and lightly rinsed her coffee cup in the sink.
She slowly looked around the room—
more organized than before,
and somehow feeling a little more spacious.
She picked up a small trash bag
and headed toward the door.
Slipping into her low heels,
she applied Rouge Coco Flash in front of the entryway mirror.
(Yeah… I think I’ll be okay.)
The expression reflected back at her
was brighter than she had expected.
“I’m off.”
As she opened the door,
the crisp midwinter air filled her lungs.
Walking toward the station,
she found herself thinking—
The version of her
who once clicked along in Louboutin heels,
performing the role of “Perfect Murata Anna,”
felt like someone from a distant past.
At the station near her office,
she spotted three familiar figures ahead.
She quickened her pace and called out brightly,
“Good morning!”
“Good morning!!”
They answered in unison.
As she was about to pass them,
Mizuki caught up beside her.
“Huh? Anna, you’re shorter today!”
Usually Mizuki would look up at her—
today, their eyes met at the same level.
“Yeah. I quit the heels.”
“It’s kind of exciting being at the same eye level.”
“What does that even mean?” she laughed.
Their casual banter bounced lightly between them.
When they fell slightly behind the other two,
Anna leaned in and whispered,
“Don’t Yoshida and Tachibana seem kind of… close today?”
They were both on her team,
so she had seen them together many times.
But the air between them today
felt a little sweeter than usual.
Mizuki hesitated for a moment,
then murmured, “Well… it’s Anna, so it’s fine.”
She explained that Yoshida had confessed to Nako recently,
and that Nako had said yes that very morning.
“Whaaat!! That’s amazing!!!”
“You noticed too, Anna?”
“Of course. Yoshida is so obvious.”
“Poor Shota!!!”
They giggled in hushed voices
until Yoshida hurried over.
“Hey, Mizuki! You told Murata-san, didn’t you!”
Beside him,
Nako’s cheeks were flushed—
a little shy, a little anxious.
“It’s okay, Tachibana.
I won’t tell anyone. But…”
“But…?”
“Let me celebrate you sometime!”
As she said it,
Anna surprised herself.
She had just broken up with her boyfriend—
and yet,
she genuinely felt happy for them.
At that moment,
tears welled up in Nako’s eyes.
“Hey! I really mean it. It’s okay.”
Anna hurriedly handed her a handkerchief.
Nako accepted it quietly
and wiped her tears.
Mizuki gently patted Nako’s head.
“See? If it’s Anna, it’s fine, right?”
Nako nodded over and over.
Watching them,
Yoshida added softly,
“Tachibana was really worried
it might affect her work.”
“That sounds like her,” Anna smiled.
“Murata-san,
I’ll keep working hard from here on out.
Please continue guiding me.”
It wasn’t the same as
“fresh graduate Yoshida.”
There was steadiness in his eyes now.
Anna felt her heartbeat quicken—just slightly.
“Yoshida…”
“…Yes?”
“That version of you is way better.
Stay just as you are. Stay Kinari.”
With that,
Anna walked ahead toward the office.
“Wait, Murata-san!
What does ‘Kinari’ mean?!”
Her juniors called after her.
(Ah… I’m happy.)
The clear winter sky filled her vision,
and she felt it deeply.
Not perfect.
But she liked who she was now
more than ever.
There were days
when she was swept along by busyness—
thinking she was choosing,
when she was only being carried.
Even so—
Without those days,
she would not be standing here now.
The past no longer felt heavy.
It had quietly accumulated,
forming a steady outline within her.
Ah… I’m happy.
The fact that she could think that—
that itself
was the answer.
