Stay Positive from the Morning! Start Your Day with Morning Stretching
[Introduction]
"Mornings are always so hectic..."
Don't you feel that way? Especially in dual-income households with children, mornings are like a battlefield. Preparing breakfast, getting the kids ready, getting yourself ready... many people find they don't even have a moment to sit down until just before they leave the house.
I am one of those people. I am a father in my 40s with two daughters, and I am part of a dual-income household. Working in coordination with my wife, who is in management, I struggle daily with housework and childcare. Even in our home, we recently adopted a "small habit" that has changed the morning atmosphere to be much more positive.
That is—"morning stretching."
Just five minutes of stretching. But those five minutes make all the difference. This habit helps loosen up both body and mind, allowing you to start your day much more comfortably. In this article, I will introduce the benefits and practical methods of a "morning stretching" habit that even busy dual-income families in their 40s can maintain without difficulty, sharing examples from our own home.
1. Three Benefits of Morning Stretching
Many people may have the image that stretching is just a warm-up before exercise, but in fact, "morning" is the perfect time for it. Specifically, you can expect the following effects.
① Promotes waking up the body While we sleep, our bodies remain almost stationary for nearly eight hours. By stretching out stiff muscles in the morning, blood flow is promoted, and both your mind and body wake up feeling sharp.
② Regulates the autonomic nervous system and leads to mental stability Stretching while being conscious of deep breathing helps with the smooth transition from the parasympathetic to the sympathetic nervous system. This allows you to start your day with a calm mind that is resilient to stress.
③ Regulates the morning rhythm for the whole family In our home, stretching with the children has become a routine. On mornings when my 4-year-old daughter says, "Daddy, it's time to stretch!" it just makes me smile.
2. Just 5 Minutes! Simple Stretching Menu
I can hear you saying, "I don't have time for stretching in the morning..." but it only takes 5 minutes a day. Plus, it doesn't take up space and requires no equipment.
Below, I will introduce the morning stretching menu that we practice in our home.
[The Kan-Ebisu Family Morning Stretch (5-minute version)]
-
Deep Breathing & Shoulder Rolls (30 seconds)
Take a deep breath in through your nose and roll your shoulders widely while exhaling through your mouth.
-
Neck Rolls & Shoulder Blade Stretch (1 minute)
Slowly roll your neck from side to side, and pull your arms back while being conscious of your shoulder blades.
-
Side Stretch (1 minute)
Raise both hands and lean your body to the left and right to stretch your sides.
-
Forward Fold and Hamstring Stretch (1 minute)
Slowly exhale while folding forward. Do it at your own pace without pushing yourself.
-
Ankle rotations & calf stretches (1 minute 30 seconds)
Rotate your ankles and stretch your calves one leg at a time while leaning against a wall.
5 minutes total.
My third-grade daughter calls it "stretchy gymnastics" and often does it with a smile in the morning.
3. Tips for making stretching a habit
The biggest tip for consistency is "don't aim for perfection."
Keeping the following points in mind will make it easier to continue.
■ Incorporate it into your morning routine By inserting it between actions you already do—like drinking water after waking up, then stretching, then washing your face—it becomes easier to make it a natural habit.
■ Involve your family Even if a dad can't keep it up alone, it's easier to continue when doing it with the kids. Enjoying it together is the key to habituation.
■ Do your best for the first 3 days The human brain has a nature of "disliking change," so the first three days are the hurdle. Once you get past that, your body will naturally start to crave it.
4. Why it's recommended for busy dual-income families
For a parent in a dual-income household like me, the morning is all about racing against time.
But, conversely, just by "changing how you spend your morning" a little, the rest of the day becomes significantly easier. Specifically:
Children started moving without fussing
I stopped feeling irritated in the morning, and conversations with my partner became smoother
I can start my own work with a positive mindset
In other words, with just a 5-minute investment, the quality of your day changes significantly.
5. Recommended stretching gear and how to use it
Once you get used to it, I also recommend incorporating items like the following.
Yoga mat (prevents slipping and keeps your knees from hurting)
Stretch pole (relieves stiffness in the back and pelvic area)
Foam roller (myofascial release in a short time)
Recently, there are many free guide videos on YouTube and apps, but a perfect first step is the [Home Stretch DVD + Commentary Book] set. It is effective in a short time and the explanations are easy to understand, so even beginners can feel at ease.
