The “Supporters” Reach Their Limit First

“I want to help people in need.”

In the worlds of social welfare, labor unions, and civic activism,
there are many people who hold that sentiment.

I myself
have had increasing opportunities to interact with such people.

But recently, I have also come to see something else.

That is,

the “supporters” are reaching their limits first

.

—

On the front lines,

・There aren't enough people
・There isn't enough money
・Yet consultations are increasing

Such a state is happening as a matter of course.

—

Therefore,

there are quite a lot of situations where things that should ideally be established as “work” are

being filled by good intentions

.

—

・Responding on days off
・Listening to people outside of work hours
・Taking on too much because they can't say no

This is how things are running under the guise of “kindness.”

But what happens if that continues?

The “supporters” break down—

In fact,

the more responsible a person is,

the more they push themselves to the limit.
And the more someone wants to “help,”

the more they put themselves last.

—

I have recently come to think that

this is less of an individual problem and more of a

“structural problem.”

—

Of course,

it is not something that can be measured by money alone.
But,


a state that “exists because of good intentions”
is,

in other words,

“it stops when the good intentions run out.”—

That is why, in reality,

・People providing support should not be exhausted

・There should be a system that allows them to continue

・It should function without requiring unreasonable effort
I believe that “support” includes all of that.

Recently, I feel that
not only for “people in need,” but also

“a system to support the supporters”

is also necessary.

The moment welfare breaks down

might not be just about the “numbers,” but

“when good intentions become the prerequisite.”
