Deciphering the Vector of Information - The Nature of True Intelligence
Hello everyone.
Today, I would like to reflect on a very interesting quote.
"Information flying around in the world always carries a vector. In other words, it has a direction added to it—an attempt to guide, an inclusion of desire, or a pursuit of the sender's interests." - Bagdash (Lieutenant Colonel of the Free Planets Alliance, a character from Legend of the Galactic Heroes)

This quote strikes at the very essence of information in modern society. We are exposed to vast amounts of information every day, but not all of it is neutral or objective. Rather, most information possesses a "vector," meaning a specific directionality.
So, what exactly does this vector mean?
Inducement: The intention to lead the recipient of the information toward a specific thought or action.
Desire: Elements that reflect the hopes or ideals of the information sender.
Interest-orientation: The tendency to maximize the benefits for the party disseminating the information.
These vectors are woven into information, sometimes overtly and sometimes subtly. For example, news reports, advertisements, social media posts, and even academic papers can be considered to carry some form of vector.
What is important is to recognize the existence of such vectors and to cultivate the ability to view information critically. True intelligence lies not in accepting superficial information as it is, but in the power to read the intentions and directions behind it.
So, how can we acquire this ability?
Multifaceted information gathering: Collecting information from diverse perspectives rather than relying on a single source.
Critical thinking training: Developing the habit of constantly asking "Why?" and "Whose interest does this serve?"
Practicing metacognition: Objectively observing one's own thought processes and biases.
Improving logical thinking skills: Honing the ability to analyze the consistency and logical connections of information.
Understanding historical and cultural context: Considering the background and environment in which the information was born.
Through these practices, we can discern the vectors of information and gain deeper insights. And that is precisely the intelligence essential for surviving in modern society.
Finally, this way of thinking should not only be applied to doubting information but also to the information we ourselves disseminate. We, too, may be sending out information with vectors, whether consciously or unconsciously. Maintaining an attitude of self-awareness and self-criticism is important for polishing true intelligence.
Why not take this opportunity to reconsider how you engage with information on a daily basis? That should be the first step toward deeper understanding and insight.
