Episode 5: Unexpected Help
The woman walked down the quiet street and eventually stopped in front of a house. She gestured for me to come inside. At first, I was a bit confused, but having no other options, I followed her into the house.
Then, something surprising happened. She said something to me, but since it was in Japanese, I couldn't understand it at all.
At that moment, I suddenly remembered the book I had with me. It was a book containing translations between Japanese and Urdu in Roman script. I hurriedly showed her the book. She began to read aloud, and through that, I was able to convey my name and where I was from.
Just as our conversation using the book began to progress, the door opened.
A young man entered from outside. He looked at me with a bit of surprise, but I immediately realized he was the woman's son. He was a university student. And, most thankfully, he understood a little English! Finally, I had met someone I could have a proper conversation with.
Thanks to the son acting as an interpreter, I was able to explain my situation in detail. And at that moment, a surprising fact came to light.
Actually, before returning, that taxi driver had first gone to the police station.
He explained my situation to the police, pleading that "it is severely cold, and it is dangerous to leave someone outside like this." And there, he learned something important.
The owner of the apartment I had been waiting at was this very woman!
With the help of the police, the driver found her contact information and called her first. She understood the situation immediately and came to help me.
However, that wasn't all.
The driver had intended that if she didn't answer the phone or couldn't come to help, he would let me stay at his own home and go back with the police the next morning to confirm the address. This was because that night was New Year's Eve, and most people were away on long holidays. He was truly concerned for my well-being. He didn't just want to help; he wanted to ensure my safety until the very end.
At that moment, my heart was filled with immense gratitude. If it hadn't been for him, I might have been left stranded in the freezing cold. His selfless kindness saved me from the worst-case scenario.
But what will happen after this? How will the woman and her son help me? And what will become of me in this house?
