Trying out ZABBIX Part 1

Good evening, this is Cardy.
I might be using ZABBIX at work, so I decided to try it out personally as well, and I plan to write about ZABBIX on my blog for a while.
It is planned to be an 8-part series.

STEP 1 Installing ZABBIX AGENT ← This article is here
STEP 2 Configuring ZABBIX AGENT
STEP 3 Setting up ZABBIX Server with Docker
STEP 4 Server configuration
STEP 5 Monitoring the moment monitoring begins
STEP 6 Defining triggers
STEP 7 Alert settings & notifications
STEP 8 Summary?

What is ZABBIX?

Zabbix is an integrated monitoring tool for continuously monitoring the status of servers, network equipment, and applications.
It periodically collects and visualizes CPU usage, memory, disk space, process status, etc., and can notify you via alerts when predefined conditions are exceeded. It supports a wide range of monitoring targets from on-premises to cloud, and is characterized by detailed monitoring using an agent-based approach and flexible monitoring definitions based on its design philosophy.
It is used as a mechanism not to "find abnormalities," but to "keep knowing the normal state."

So, while it is not really a tool for personal use, as I mentioned at the beginning, I might use it at work, so I will write this blog for study purposes.

Downloading ZABBIX AGENT

You can download it for free from this site.
Although it is a tool used in enterprises, it is released as open source (GPL v2), and it is possible to use everything for free.

However, support and training to master it are paid services.

When you open the page, you should see a screen like this. Select the installer according to your environment.
Since I am in a Windows environment, I used these settings.

In the case of Windows, two installers appear, but basically, it seems you should select "2".
The one that is not "2" seems to be used when working in legacy environments.

Installing ZABBIX AGENT

Launch the downloaded installer.

There is one screen for input fields, so enter the necessary information.

Host name : The host name is displayed by default.
Zabbix server IP/DNS: Set to 127.0.0.1 (default is blank)
Agent listen port: 10050 (default)
Server or Proxy for active checks: 127.0.0.1 (default)
Enable PSK: OFF
Add agent location to the PATH: ON

The Zabbix server IP/DNS field is blank in the initial state, but if you do not specify 127.0.0.1 here, the following message will be displayed and you cannot proceed.

After this, the install button will appear, so proceed and the installation will be completed on the following screen.

After installation, if zabbix_agent2.exe is running in the Task Manager, the installation is successful.

Status of "done" so far

✅ Zabbix Agent is running
✅ Starts automatically when the OS boots
✅ Ready to be monitored

This article covers up to the installation.
Next time, it will be STEP 2, "Configuring Zabbix Agent."
