People Who Can and Cannot Make Money Through Writing
If you want to become someone who can make money through your writing, you must strive to write things that are useful to many people.
Alternatively, even if it is not particularly useful, people will pay money if they feel that it was incredibly interesting.
If your writing is neither useful nor interesting, the inevitable result is that people will think, 'I shouldn't have read this; I wasted my time.'
It may sound harsh, but unless your writing is either 'useful' or 'interesting,' you cannot make money from it.
So, what exactly are 'useful writing' and 'interesting writing'?
Let's start by looking at 'useful writing.'
Two tips for becoming someone who can make money through useful writing
For example, suppose an ordinary middle-aged man runs into a friend on a train for the first time in ten years.
This might be an amazing story for him personally. Let's say he then writes about his college days with great excitement on his blog.
If you happened to read that blog, how do you think you would feel?
Honestly, you would probably think, 'So what?' or 'And?'
Unless you are a huge fan of that man (laughs), most people would have the same reaction as you.
This is a classic example of writing that cannot make money.
If you want to make money from the writing you produce, it is important to provide some kind of 'solution or hope' for the 'problems or challenges' your readers are facing.
For example, suppose someone who wanted to go on a diet but couldn't see information saying, 'I lost weight just by doing X!' and tried it, and they actually lost a lot of weight.
There is value in writing like this. Many people would want to try it out for themselves.
Or, 'Three pickup lines I was taught after 34 years of being single. These helped me get a boyfriend!'
People who are genuinely struggling with such issues would want to know what comes next, wouldn't they?
Alternatively, imagine there is a mother who finds herself getting angry at her children and wants to do something about it.
In that case, if you wrote something with a title like 'The Book That Stops You From Getting Irritated at Your Kids,' a mother who saw it would surely be curious and want to read it to find out what kind of book it is.
In this way, if it is clearly shown that something is "useful," "removes discomfort," or "provides a positive benefit," and if you can make the reader think, "I could do this too!" or "This was very helpful!," then people will pay money.
Whether a piece of writing is useful is determined by these two factors: "the problem the reader is facing in life is significant" and "it can be solved easily."
The clearer these two factors are, the higher the value of the information, and the more the writing becomes something for which you can receive payment.
However, one thing to be careful about is that there are many cases where people overlook the "can be solved easily" part.
Let's look a little closer at what that means.
Does "You too can become Ichiro!" fail to make money?!
Let's say former Major Leaguer Ichiro looks back on his life and publishes a book titled "You Too Can Become Ichiro." I think most people would feel that they could never become like that.
The value of the information is high, but don't you feel like retorting, "That's impossible!"?
That won't work.
In other words, it cannot be called writing that easily solves the worries the reader is carrying.
The important thing is whether you can make the reader think, "I could do this too!"
Conversely, this means you do not need to be a famous expert in some field. If you can clearly write about your own relatable success stories, that might actually give the reader more hope.
Alternatively, please write about ways to easily solve the reader's problems using the knowledge or skills you possess. The point is the "easily" part, so it is often better not to overthink it.
When I talk about things like this, you might feel, "Even so, I don't have any information that would be useful to readers" or "I don't know what valuable information is," but there is no need to be pessimistic.
In that case, you should just write interesting content.
So, what is interesting writing?
There are three elements to this.
Double your readers! 3 tips for writing interesting content that anyone can do
Before I talk about it in detail, there is one thing I want to touch upon first.
To begin with, what kind of person do you think writes content that cannot earn money?
Please take this opportunity to think about it.
My image of a 'person who cannot earn money through writing' is a 'pitiful person who is monologuing forever'.
It might have been an episode that the writer felt was 'good'.
However, such writing has no punchline. When someone who is not a fan of the writer reads it, they rarely feel any value.
However, even if it is a personal episode, what if the title was 'What is the one reason why my aunt, who lived a single life and passed away last month at 79, never accepted a proposal?'
Even if the aunt is an ordinary person, it piques your interest a little, doesn't it?
I don't know if that information is useful, but I think you would feel 'That sounds interesting! What does that mean?' and become curious about what kind of drama there was, or become interested and want to read it.
If you write, 'I had lunch with my aunt in Shinjuku for the first time in a while last week!', there is no value at all. Unless you are a fan of the writer, it ends with, 'Oh, that's nice'.
In other words, if the information has 'interest, concern, or entertainment value', it will not only be read even if it is not useful, but it can also earn money.
Therefore, if you want to become a 'person who can earn money' with your writing, try writing things that make people think, 'This seems useful' or 'This is interesting, so I have to buy it or read it'.
If you want to write in fields like business or self-improvement, you should disseminate information that is 'useful to someone'.
If you want to write essays or novels, it is important to disseminate information from the perspective of 'interest, concern, and entertainment value'.
There are surely things in your life that are useful to someone or that people find interesting.
That becomes the value of your writing, and as a result, you can become a person who earns money through your writing.
