It is not events that determine your life, but your 'attitude'
In life, there are moments for everyone that do not go as planned.
Efforts go unrewarded.
Even when you act with sincerity, you are misunderstood.
At such times, it is not uncommon for people to feel, 'Why me?'
However, when facing the same event, some people become depressed, while others gain wisdom and grow stronger from it.
The difference lies not in 'what happened,' but in 'how you accept it and how you react to it.'
Some psychologists teach that there are three central values in life.
They are 'experience,' 'creation,' and 'attitude.'
Among them, the most important is 'attitude'—that is, your own stance.
Chapter 1: The Three Values of Life — Experience, Creation, and Attitude
First, 'experience' refers to all the events that happen to you.
Joy and sorrow, success and failure are all materials that shape our lives.
Accumulating experiences gives depth to life.
Next is 'creation'.
This is the value of bringing something into existence through your own will and actions.
Work, art, ideas, relationships with others—creation is also about 'expressing your existence within society.'
And the third is 'attitude'.
No matter what you experience or what you create, ultimately, how you assign meaning to it is determined by your 'attitude'.
To put it extremely, we shape our lives not by 'what happened,' but by 'how we accepted it.'
Chapter 2: Why 'Attitude' Determines the Quality of Life
For example, even in the same work environment, there are those who are always dissatisfied and those who proactively try to make improvements.
What creates this difference is not the environment itself, but the 'attitude' toward it.
In a team I was involved with previously, something like this happened.
The project was not progressing well, and many members were wrapped in a mood of resignation.
In the midst of that, one leader said,
'Let's think together about what we can learn from this situation.'
With those words, the atmosphere changed.
The team began to move again, and as a result, they achieved their goal.
What the leader changed was not the 'situation,' but the 'attitude.'
It is the same in life.
It is difficult to change difficult events.
However, how we react to them is always our own freedom.
Chapter 3: The Power Brought by the 'Freedom of Reaction'
One of the great powers that only humans possess is the 'freedom of choice between stimulus and response.'
When you are hurt by someone, whether to get angry, forgive, stay silent, or laugh—you are the one who chooses.
No matter how harsh the reality, 'how you react' cannot be taken away from you.
There was a woman.
Depressed after a major failure, she said one day,
'I can decide how to accept this event.
The moment I realized that, I felt as if a light had shone into my heart.'
Even if the event itself does not change, if your interpretation of it changes, the meaning of your life also changes.
This is the power of 'attitude'.
Chapter 4: How to Cultivate an 'Attitude' That Overcomes Hardship
So, how can one develop a strong attitude?
It is born from the accumulation of small, daily choices.
・Instead of complaining, look for things to be grateful for.
・Instead of blaming the past, turn it into a lesson.
・Instead of criticizing others, re-examine your own actions.
A series of such 'fine-tunings' will eventually build a strong core of character.
Also, an 'attitude' is not something you acquire once and then you are done.
It is something you must constantly polish.
I myself sometimes fail or become emotional.
Even so, just by asking myself, 'What kind of attitude am I using to face this situation right now?', I have become able to recover little by little.
Chapter 5: Your 'reaction' changes those around you
The power of attitude not only changes your own life, but also influences those around you.
When you are near a positive person, you naturally become positive.
Conversely, near a pessimistic person, the atmosphere becomes heavy.
In other words, 'your attitude' is also an 'environment' for others.
If you want to improve your relationships with family or colleagues, start by changing your own reactions.
Listen calmly, respond with a smile, do not deny the other person—.
Just by doing that, a change will occur in the other person's heart.
Summary: Life changes with 'attitude'
Experiences sometimes hurt us.
Creation requires effort.
However, 'attitude' is always in your own hands.
No matter what happens, you yourself can choose 'how to accept it and how to react to it'.
The accumulation of those choices shapes your character and determines the quality of your life.
