Elementary School Read-Aloud Record #4: Books Read in the Third Term

I'm Kei, a mom of a second-grade boy.

It's early March, and the end of this school year is finally in sight.
My volunteer read-aloud activities at the elementary school have also successfully concluded for this year.

This time, I'd like to introduce the books I read during the third term.

Books read in the third term

The Story of the Twelve Zodiac Signs

Author: Rintaro Uchida
Illustrator: Takashi Yamamoto
Publisher: Iwasaki Shoten
Publication Date: November 2002

I read this in a third-grade class in January.

A unique zodiac story depicted with Rintaro Uchida's rhythmic prose and Takashi Yamamoto's dynamic illustrations.

It's a recommended book for when you welcome the new year.

Snowball

Author: Kim Gi-jeong
Illustrator: Moon Jong-hoon
Translator: Kiyomi Otake
Publisher: Holp Shuppan
Publication Date: November 21, 2024

I read this in a third-grade class in February.

A story that vividly depicts children absorbed in playing in the snow.
The exciting final scene is also a highlight.

The week before I read this picture book, it snowed in my area, which is rare.
It's a fond memory that a veteran volunteer praised my book selection, saying, 'This is the perfect book for this time of year.'

Let's Go to School!

Author: Izumi Motoshita
Illustrator: Takashi Yamamoto
Publisher: Iwasaki Shoten
Publication Date: December 2011

After being absent for a long time due to a cold, you sometimes just don't feel like going to school, right?

Kengo tells stories about yokai as an excuse to skip school to Seigi, who came to invite him to school.

The names of those yokai are so unique!
They were long and difficult, so I practiced many times before the read-aloud session.

While laughing at the humor of the yokai, the ending, where you feel the power of friendship, warms the heart.

I chose this picture book for the final read-aloud session of the school year, wishing for each and every child that they might have friends like these two.

Conclusion

I have loved picture books since I was small and used to work as a librarian.

However, the university library where I worked had many specialized books, and at the time, I had almost no opportunity to interact with picture books.

It was after my son was born that I was drawn back into the world of picture books.

As we went to the library together and turned the pages, I became completely captivated by their joy and depth.

And so, I began volunteering for read-aloud sessions last May.

Now that a full season has passed, there are three things I feel glad I did. They are:

  • Increased interaction with the children

  • The connections formed with other volunteers

  • The encounters with wonderful books

Until now, I had chosen books from a personal perspective, such as 'I want my son to read this' or 'I want to read this myself,' but since my audience became many elementary school students, my approach to selecting books has expanded significantly.

'Is this suitable for children in this grade?'
'Is the content perfect for the season?'
'What do I want to convey to the children today?'

Coming to face each book from a multifaceted perspective while imagining the children's expressionshas been a major change for me.

I feel that this school year was a year in which I realized the power to resonate with the heart that picture books possess through my read-aloud volunteering.

I will be taking a break from my read-aloud articles for a while, but I want to continue this activity while cherishing the lessons and connections I have made.

Thank you for reading until the end.
