Yew and Varied Tit
On an afternoon after the rain in early October, I was walking outside and could hear the birds chirping noisily.
Three or four black, white, and orange varied tits had gathered in a yew tree. Looking closely, I saw that the yew tree was covered in bright red berries, and it seemed the varied tits had come to eat them. They were chirping loudly and flying from branch to branch.
I learned for the first time this year that yew berries are a vivid red. I received a yew tree as a commemorative gift when I was in elementary school and planted it in my parents' garden, but our yew tree never bore fruit.
So, I looked it up. It turns out yew trees have male and female plants, and the female ones bear red berries. Our yew must have been a male.
By the way, yew berries are sweet and edible. However, the seeds are highly toxic, so you must never eat them. It is said that varied tits also eat only the fruit and do not eat the seeds.
