When I first saw AI art, I couldn't hide my surprise at its high level of perfection!

Modern cityscapes painted with Van Gogh-like brushstrokes, portraits so realistic you'd mistake them for photographs—the range of works created by AI is expanding every day.

But let's pause and think for a moment.

Can AI truly surpass human creativity?

Rapidly Evolving AI Art

The situation surrounding AI art is currently shifting dramatically.

There was even news that an abstract painting generated by AI was sold at a gallery in New York for 20 million yen.

Furthermore, among young artists, there is a growing movement to view AI as a "co-creator" and actively incorporate it into their creative process.

Will AI steal our jobs?

While there were voices of concern, in reality, many creators have begun utilizing AI as a new tool for expression.

For example, in the advertising industry, it is said that using AI to create rough drafts and gather visual materials is significantly broadening the scope of creativity.

What AI Can and Cannot Do

Certainly, AI has strengths that humans cannot imitate. It learns from tens of thousands of paintings and combines their characteristics to produce new works.

Moreover, it operates 24 hours a day and can maintain a consistent level of quality. This should be a reassuring ally for creators racing against deadlines.

But consider this for a moment.

Think about your favorite piece of art. Does it stay with you simply because it is “skillful”?

There is likely a philosophy of life or a sentiment embedded in the work by its creator.

A poem born from the pain of heartbreak, a painting expressing anger toward society, a song singing of nostalgia for one's hometown—

What lies there are the nuances of human emotion that cannot be measured by data.

Humans and AI: A New Form of Creation

In fact, many artists do not seem to view AI as an "enemy."

Rather, an increasing number of people see it as a “partner” that expands new possibilities. One illustrator told me this:

“I use AI for rough drafts and organizing ideas. But the final touches are always done by hand. That is how I can put my own personality into it.” Indeed, AI is a convenient tool. But what we choose to express using it—is that not ultimately determined by human creativity?

Challenges and Prospects

Of course, AI art also has its challenges. There are still many points that require discussion, such as copyright issues and the ethical handling of the data that AI learns from.

However, as we face these challenges, humans and AI working together by leveraging their respective strengths—such a future does not feel far off.

Rather, with the advent of AI, we may have been given an opportunity to rethink deep questions such as “What is humanity?” and “What is the essence of creativity?”

Ultimately, the question of “Can we beat AI?” might have been a bit misguided. What matters is what kind of new expressions humans can create using this new “tool” called AI.
