Notes 20260609 10 days in Graz

Good morning.

It is my 10th day since arriving in Graz, Austria 🇦🇹. The conditions have been such that it rains one out of every three days I've been here, but yesterday the thunder and lightning were incredible. I'm staying in an area surrounded by rural landscapes, and yesterday I saw lightning that could truly be called a bolt of lightning; it was genuinely scary.

I went to lunch yesterday with Zlatko, the organizer of this event. He lives in Graz, but his roots are in Bosnia. He moved to Austria during the 1992 conflict. Because of that connection, he treated me to Bosnian cuisine.

Since Bosnia is a mountainous country, the food is centered around meat dishes. I had lamb, and it was delicious with no gamey smell and excellent seasoning. I also had a Bosnian sweet, but it was incredibly sugary. Haha. Come to think of it, I haven't had a Sachertorte since coming to Austria. Maybe today is my last chance...

It was a great time to have a deep conversation about the event and what lies ahead. Afterward, we went to an antique shop run by his brother.

There was a corner with a huge stack of records, so I was browsing through them and found a rather rare one. When I tried to buy it as a souvenir to take home, he said, 'This is a gift,' and just gave it to me. Danke schön.

Then I returned to the hotel and got back to work. I am steadily and quietly making progress on my production tasks as well.

Well, today is effectively my final day in Graz.
I wanted to go to Vienna and Salzburg, but on weekdays, I ended up in work mode in my hotel room. It looks like things will continue to be hectic for a while after I return to Japan, but this is the time to push through for the first half of the year.

Tonight, I plan to go to dinner with a staff member I've become friends with here. Until then, I will keep working. If the rain stops, I'll go for a run.
