Plants Tell the Story of Their Land: The Essence of Lavender
When you hear the word lavender, many people might think of a single scent.
However, in reality, the scent of lavender varies surprisingly depending on where it is grown.
Some have a crisp, transparent quality, while others carry a soft sweetness or a distinct, powerful herbal character.
What creates these differences is not the type of plant, but the environment in which it grew.
Climate, altitude, soil, precipitation, and hours of sunlight.
As these natural conditions overlap in complex ways, the balance of aromatic components in the essential oil shifts, giving birth to a unique personality for each.
In other words, plants are telling the story of the land where they grew through their scent.
That is why aromatherapists and perfumers do not judge based on the name 'lavender' alone.
Is it from France?
Is it from Bulgaria?
Was it grown in Hokkaido?
In what land and in what kind of environment did it grow?
They approach it as a single plant, including that background.
This perspective does not apply only to plants.
In our daily lives, we also tend to judge people and things by visible labels such as titles, brands, educational background, or occupation.
But isn't it the experiences, environment, and accumulated time in the background that truly shape their value?
Even with the same title, the paths taken are different.
Even with the same product, the thoughts and techniques put into making it are different.
And even with the same lavender, if the land where it grew is different, the scent changes.
Instead of thinking that the same name means the same thing,
'Why did this difference come to be?'
Look toward the background.
I believe that just by having that perspective, not only the way you look at plants, but also the way you look at people, work, and life will change a little.
Every time I study scent, I feel that while plants do not have words, they quietly tell of the land's climate, culture, and the changing of the seasons through their fragrance.
A single bottle of essential oil contains the landscape of that land, the air of that land, and the time accumulated in that land.
That is precisely why scent is so profound.
Plants tell the story of their land.
And perhaps listening to that voice leads to cultivating an eye for seeing the essence.
