A Novel to Read When You Want to Cry: "CALAMITY" Vol. 7
✨ Previous story ↓ ✨
Around that time, Yukina's older brother, Masato, had turned ten years old.
And he had overheard the adults' conversation about his sister's fate in great detail.
Although Masato was deeply shocked, he desperately tried to entertain his sister every day, thinking about what he could do as her older brother and trying to take action.
One day.
Yukina was eating dinner in the living room with her family.
That was when it happened.
Suddenly, Yukina's body swayed, and unexpected words were uttered from her mouth.
"Because Masato is in this land, a great calamity shall befall it."
The voice was not Yukina's. It was low, sounding just like an old woman's.
Her parents realized that this was a divine oracle.
Masato was told that he would bring about a disaster, and even at ten years old, he could not hide his agitation.
Yukina, who had delivered the oracle, fainted right there.
Afterward, her parents watched over Yukina as she regained consciousness, their expressions filled with anxiety.
The next day, the family of four visited a shrine to consult the chief priest about the previous night's oracle.
Their mother gripped Masato and Yukina's hands tightly, and a slight hesitation was visible as the two passed through the shrine's torii gate.
Their footsteps as they climbed the stone steps toward the chief priest were heavier than usual, and they stopped many times to look back at the path they had come.
Their father walked in the lead with a serious face, but his hands were clenched with tension.
He occasionally looked at the trees and stone statues of the shrine, but in reality, the scenery before his eyes must have been blurry.
Masato noticed the change in his parents' demeanor and looked back and forth between them with a suspicious expression.
However, he could not understand the complex emotions of adults and was simply gripped by a vague sense of anxiety.
In contrast to such a family, only Yukina wore her usual bright smile, happily watching the shadows cast by the torii gate and chasing a butterfly she found on the approach to the shrine.
When they arrived at the chief priest's quarters, Masato and Yukina were shown to a back room, and only the parents were to speak with the priest.
The priest sat formally before the two with a serious expression and confirmed the contents of the oracle in a slow tone.
Then, the priest opened his mouth.
"There is a secret art passed down through generations in this shrine."
"Using that secret art, we can completely erase Masato-kun's memories."
"It would be a pity for him to keep his memories until now. It is the least we can do as atonement," he explained.
The parents did not understand what was being said to them.
What were they supposed to do with Masato? They were filled with such thoughts.
However, the priest continued his story coldly.
"We will also make arrangements for an orphanage to take in Masato-kun after his memory is erased."
"There is an orphanage far away where an acquaintance of mine serves as the director."
"They will take care of Masato-kun there until the very end," he conveyed.
The father, who had finally grasped the situation, frowned and asked,
"Is there really no other choice but to let Masato go?"
The priest only replied, "We cannot take this oracle lightly."
After much agonizing, the father made a painful decision for the sake of his child's happiness.
The mother was desperately holding back her tears while choking on her words, but she finally could not suppress her emotions any longer and broke down in tears.
The father hugged the mother and comforted her, saying they would definitely be able to reunite with Masato.
And so, the memories of his younger sister, Yukina, were also to be erased along with Masato's.
The family of four was led to a room in the back of the shrine, and the chief priest lit a small but steady fire.
With that flame behind them, Masato and Yukina sat in the seats facing forward, and their parents watched them from beside them as if in prayer.
The chief priest powerfully brandished the tamagushi and began to offer a norito prayer in a voice slightly lower than usual.
After a little time passed, Masato and Yukina's consciousness began to fade away.
The chief priest's prayer echoed in their ears, and the flames occupied their entire field of vision.
