[Movie Review] "Promare": Galo and Lio Save the World!
Thank you for reading again today!
Today, I'm going to review "Promare," which I watched on Amazon Prime.
Introduction
The story is set 30 years after the "World Burning Phenomenon," which wiped out half the population due to the emergence of "Burnish," mutants with the ability to control fire. It follows Galo, a rookie firefighter in the high-mobility rescue fire brigade "Burning Rescue" formed to save people from fires caused by the Burnish, and Lio, the leader of "Mad Burnish," a group conducting radical activities to protect the rights of the Burnish, as they clash over their respective beliefs.
A hot-blooded development that doesn't betray expectations!
When you think of the duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima, you think of "Gurren Lagann." Given that, viewers will undoubtedly have high expectations, and the film delivers a performance that meets those expectations with a straight-down-the-middle pitch.
I thought it was clever how they managed to explain the flow from the first appearance of the Burnish to the "World Burning Phenomenon" and up to the present day without any dialogue, using only the power of the visuals, without it feeling awkward.
Also, every time a main character appears, there's a cut-in with their name, Galo gives a speech while being teased by his teammates, and they call out the names of their robots every time. In a normal anime, this might feel very cliché, but for some reason, in this work, it just makes you think, "This is what I've been waiting for!"
You can't take your eyes off Galo and Lio
The two protagonists, Galo Thymos and Lio Fotia, come from different backgrounds, but both are very pure in their hearts. It's a classic story of two people clashing because of their purity and then coming to understand each other through that conflict, but thanks to the brilliant fusion of the characters, the voice actors' performances, the straightforward dialogue, and the power of the visuals, I couldn't take my eyes off them until the very end.
The expression is also challenging
Considering the previous works, I expected this one to have very detailed drawings, but contrary to my expectations, the lines were not that detailed.
That said, it's not that they cut corners; I think the drawings were done with a very simple, necessary, and sufficient amount of information.
Because the art was simple, I think it had the effect of making me focus more on the characters' movements and dialogue.
The balance between the simple expression and the moments where the art breaks down was exquisite.
Conclusion
This work can be enjoyed simply by anyone, whether you are a fan of "Gurren Lagann" or have never seen it before, by empathizing with the protagonist from beginning to end without overthinking things.
That's all for this time!
Thank you for reading until the end!
If you like and follow, my creative motivation will skyrocket!
