[Gadget Review] AKG N5 Hybrid

What is the AKG N5 Hybrid?

AKG (apparently pronounced 'Ah-Car-Gay') is a manufacturer that those who are a bit particular about sound have likely seen or heard of as a brand for professional headphones.

I am not very familiar with this area myself, but the 'AKG N5 Hybrid' I reviewed this time is apparently AKG's first wireless earphone.

I had been interested in AKG products for a while, but since I don't really use headphones that much, I hadn't tried them out. However, since these are wireless earphones, I decided to give them a try.

The key point is the compact housing

My ideal for wireless earphones is that the shape of the earphone itself is compact.

A housing that sticks out of the ear might be advantageous in terms of driver size and battery capacity, but considering that earphones are often used outdoors, I believe a compact housing that is less susceptible to wind is important.
In this regard, the main point for me was that the N5 Hybrid has a compact housing.

App-dependent

That said, perhaps following the recent trend of wireless headphones, personalization via a dedicated app is a prerequisite for getting the best sound.

The personalization follows almost the same process as other models, where it shifts from low to high frequencies, and you press a button in the app when you can no longer hear the sound, much like a hearing test.

There was one point I liked about this app.

In the personalization of other earphones I have used, the common behavior is that you press a button in the app to listen to a sound, and if you press the button when you can't hear it, the next sound is played slightly louder.

However, with this behavior, it starts with a very quiet sound, so you don't know if it's playing or not, and you don't know when the sound will play, which is surprisingly confusing.

In that respect, the N5 Hybrid app uses a method where you press the button in the app to start the sound and release it when you can no longer hear it, so it was very easy to understand, including the UI, and caused no stress.

On the other hand, there is a mode to check the seal of the sound before starting personalization, but although it notifies you that sound is leaking, it does not tell you whether it is leaking from the right or left side, which made it difficult to deal with. It would be helpful if this point could be improved so that I would know immediately which earpad to replace.

The sound became very good after setting it up with the app.

I haven't tried that many wireless earphones, but I felt that the N5 Hybrid is the model where the effect of app-based settings is most apparent.

About the sound

I prefer to hear the sound of each instrument as clearly as possible, so I felt the N5 Hybrid was close to ideal.

Since this is a subjective matter, no matter how many reviewer videos you watch, I think it is best to try them out at a store if possible.

I felt that the ANC also cuts out sound almost as well as the AirPods Pro, even if not quite to the same extent. When ANC is on, car sounds are only faintly audible. It feels secure even while wearing them.

Summary

I usually use various headphones depending on my mood, but lately, I have been using the N5 Hybrid more frequently. Personally, I think this is a pair of wireless earphones that you won't regret buying.

There are still many things I haven't tried yet, so I would like to continue reporting on my experience using them.
