[Movie Review] "Poor Things"

I watched "Poor Things," so I would like to write a review.

What kind of movie is it?

Godwin Baxter (commonly known as God) works as a surgeon while also conducting research.
He is researching his daughter, Bella Baxter, who has delayed intellectual development, and he chooses Max McCandles as his research assistant.
Max is told by God to record what she eats and the words she learns, so he begins to keep records.
As Max lives with God and her, he is told by God about Bella's true identity.

Who is in it?

It is a film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who also directed "Dogtooth" and "The Favourite."

The screenplay was written by Tony McNamara, who also wrote the script for "The Favourite."

Emma Stone plays the protagonist, Bella Baxter. She also played Gwen Stacy in "The Amazing Spider-Man" and appeared in "La La Land."

Mark Ruffalo plays the research assistant, Max McCandles.

Willem Dafoe plays Bella's father, Godwin Baxter. He is an actor with a very wide range, having played roles such as the Green Goblin in the "Spider-Man" series, as well as roles in "Platoon" and "Shadow of the Vampire."

You are drawn into a unique worldview

Although this story features recognizable city names like London and Paris, it is basically set in a fictional world.

The pets kept by the Baxter family are quite unusual.
Seeing things like chickens with bulldog heads, dogs with duck heads, chickens that bark like dogs, and cars that look like horse-drawn carriages at first glance makes it impossible to tell what era the technology is supposed to be from.

Also, the costumes have a design that looks retro at first glance, but they also feel innovative, making them an important element of the world-building.

In addition, the use of color is very unique, and thepainting-like scenesfelt very impressive.

Bella Baxter's coming-of-age story

This is a story about Bella Baxter, who is sent out into the world after having lived only inside her house by her father, and who begins to awaken her sense of self while learning about the outside world, triggered by an invitation from the handsome Duncan Wedderburn.

The Bella who appears at the beginning has a little trouble walking and can barely speak, but by experiencing various things wherever she goes, she becomes able to speak clearly and even establishes her own way of thinking; Emma Stone gives a wonderful performance of her growth.

Attention to camera work

This movie employs various camera techniques, including black and white, color, fisheye lenses, and angles that sometimes look like you are peeking through a hole.

Honestly, I didn't really understand the meaning behind the use of these different camera techniques on my first viewing, but they might contain meanings related to the differences in Bella's perspective.

Summary

It was a long movie, over two hours, but I was so focused that I didn't feel the length at all.

I couldn't take my eyes off the screen because I wanted to see what kind of actions Bella's wild character would take next.
With many unique characters like her father God and Duncan, I think it was a very good movie.
