It's a little easier when the glare is reduced ~Things I bought this year that I'm glad I did~
On sunny days, the sky is dazzling.
On days when the light coming through the window is too bright, I start to feel unwell.
When I'm driving and it's too bright, my vision starts to feel unsteady.
For me, except when it's raining or at night, I feel like it's bright almost all the time while driving. Even when it's cloudy, it's bright and painful. My mother seems to be the same, but I am also 'sensitive to glare.' My maternal grandfather probably was too. And my son as well. What we all have in common is that we are all bad at regulating our autonomic nervous systems.
I first developed Meniere's disease when I was 25. In my case, I consider even slight dizziness to be a precursor to Meniere's. That might not actually be the case, but by saying I'm 'feeling a bit Meniere's-ish,' I get my husband to understand that it means 'I'm feeling dizzy and unsteady right now.'
Meniere's comes on when I'm sleep-deprived or when my neck gets unusually stiff. When typhoons or storms come, perhaps due to the atmospheric pressure, my autonomic nervous system can't regulate itself, and Meniere's comes on then, too. Maybe the fact that I always fall asleep when crossing mountains while in a car is also related to atmospheric pressure. There are days when I go to sleep feeling fine, but wake up in the morning to find my vision spinning around.
And then there's the glare.
There are times when I was fine until I left the house in the morning, but then while driving, I think, 'Oh, this isn't good (my condition).'.
Since I've had times where my physical condition gets shaky like that for a while, I've often worn sunglasses for a long time. Especially since it's dangerous while driving.
Until just recently, I had been using a pair that my husband couldn't let go of, even though they didn't fit him.
They were something he bought back when he used to participate in marathons, and they had a cool, sporty shape. Plus, the color. Sports-type sunglasses usually have a rainbow or oily look, or they're pink. I always seem to end up choosing flashy things.
I used to think, 'These are too cool, it's embarrassing!' but I wasn't picky enough to buy new ones, and I felt it would be a waste not to use them since he had gone to the trouble of buying them, so I wore them while driving.
I had been wearing sunglasses like that for a long time, but they didn't completely block the glare; they just reduced it a little. Even to that extent, it was much better than not wearing them at all. Anyway, they are essential.
But this summer, those sunglasses broke due to wear and tear.
So, since my birthday is in the autumn, I asked my husband for some sunglasses.
However, when I thought about what kind I wanted, I felt I couldn't wear stylish sunglasses for women. Why is that? It feels embarrassing at my age.
In the end, no matter what kind of sunglasses they are, I feel like wearing them is too cool, and for some reason, it's embarrassing.
Once I realized that, I felt that the sports type I had gotten used to was the best after all.
So. This is what I have on hand now.
They don't shine with that oily look like before, and they aren't pink.
Thank you.
I put them in my bag with a light heart and prepared for my next drive.
And then, I finally put on the sunglasses.
……!!
'Whoa!'
I let out a voice involuntarily.
I called out to my husband, who was in the car with me, 'What is this!'
'What is this, it's not bright!'
When I said that, my husband, who was calm, said, 'Well, they are sunglasses, after all.'
'No, no, they're different from the ones I've had until now! My eyes feel relaxed! I'm not tired!'
I spent a while putting them on and taking them off, and making my husband wear them, saying, 'Look. Isn't it amazing?' I made quite a scene.
It seems it's because they are 'polarized' glasses.
'Wow. Is it this different? Did the sunglasses I've been wearing until now not have a polarized function? Does that mean they weren't really serving much of a purpose even though they were sunglasses?'
With polarized sunglasses, the glare from the sun is very minimal. It doesn't shut it out completely, but the glare of the entire landscape is gone. When I wear them, I can feel the tension in my eyes against the glare loosening, and my whole eye can stay calm. They are clearly gentle on the eyes.
Looking at the reviews, they seem to be underwhelming for those who were expecting more, but for me, who had never experienced polarized glasses, I am fully satisfied.
'Maybe I can prevent my Meniere's from getting worse due to the glare!'
I get all excited, as if to say that days full of hope are waiting for me!
Because of that, I'm glad I bought them, or rather, I'm glad he bought them for me. I wonder if I shouldn't use the 'glad I bought' tag since he bought them for me. I'll use it for now.
Maybe because this pair I got isn't from a famous sports brand, they are also reasonably priced.
I recommend these to people who are sensitive to glare and people whose autonomic nervous system condition worsens due to strong light!!
