🎙️ This chapter was the part of the book that gave me the strongest shock and impression, and I read it over and over again. I felt as if I had found the answer to a question I had held within myself for many years.

In-en (Causal relations / Inevitability of cause and effect)

❓In-en Inga = Cause and effect

❓In (Cause) 👉 The origin of some action

❓En (Condition) 👉 Surrounding conditions. Nothing can exist apart from cause and condition. To accept (akirameru) the cause and condition.

❓Akira (akira)meru 👉 To see clearly = To contemplate (taikan) 👉 To firmly discern the path of things

❓Inevitability of cause and effect 👉 Everything has a cause, and results arise prompted by various conditions (conditions). This is the law (P.89)

Good conditions gather under good causes and good results emerge, while bad causes appear as bad results. If you correct the causes and conditions,, the results will naturally change, and you can have any good future. Depending on how you hold your heart, you can create good causes and conditions (P.90).

The inevitability of cause and effect is fate,, not destiny,, something you created yourself,, something you will create from now on (P.91).

The reason good people sometimes become unhappy or bad people prosper is because it appears as a result right away. It is because there is a difference in speed where causes and conditions are tied (P.92).

❓Three Times of Karmic Retribution ①Immediate Retribution 👉 When the cause and effect of the present appear as a result immediately ②Retribution in the Next Life 👉 When the cause and effect of the present appear as a result in the next life ③Retribution in Subsequent Lives 👉 When the cause and effect of the present appear as a result in lives further in the future

❓Infallible Causality 👉Cause and effect is something absolute that can never be deceived and is inevitable.

❓Not Falling into Causality 👉 That which does not fall into causality is the Buddha-mind, the Unborn (P.94)

⚠️ In this life, they have done nothing wrong.

Even though they live honestly and diligently, they work and work without reward, are betrayed or suffer losses, and some are at the bottom of poverty. Why do they face such things? Even if they have done nothing wrong in this life, in a previous life or the life before that, or even before that, not only themselves, but someone in their family had committed a sin, and the result is simply appearing now. To escape from this suffering, one should live a life that changes those bad karmic connections into good karmic connections.

The current daily suffering is erasing that bad karma. It is a chance to turn evil into good, so rather than that, while actively accepting it (or rather, receiving it with joy), one should strive to change it into good karma by living a righteous heart and righteous life that is in accordance with the truth (effort) (P.96).

🎙️ I found peace reading this there. I don't know how much it saved me.

🎙️ That is not about me. Well, certainly there are not a few parts that overlap with my own life, and since I have ended up like this, it is hard to say that I have been rewarded in any way (👉 regarding my mistakes, it is self-inflicted), but I still feel that I have had many good experiences in the past. Of course, it is not that I have no regrets, but rather, or in addition to that, it is because I have seen such unrewarded people among those very close to me. That was one of the eternal mysteries for me. To repeat, I once thought I had found the answer.

However, after being released, I learned the details of various incidents that I did not know about or knew nothing about, and when I thought about the perpetrators, and above all, the victims, especially in the case of heinous crimes, it is too cruel. Even if, in a past life or the life before that, or even before that, there was a sin committed not only by oneself but by someone in the family, and the result is appearing now.

It is said that the victim of that incident, in the midst of such a tragic and cruel situation, said to the perpetrator,

"Kill me."

The victim's body, according to the autopsy, had a shrunken brain (👉 human brains shrink in the midst of the thought of "wanting to die").

How are this victim and the victim's bereaved family supposed to accept the story of karma (causality, inevitable cause and effect) and the retribution of the three times?

Even if one could think that there will be good things in the next life.

Even if everything returns to nothingness or emptiness, or if the origin is there and one is nothingness oneself, realistically, human and animal bodies feel pain. What would happen if I or my family met the same fate as that victim? Even if the perpetrator was mentally incompetent or insane and could not judge right from wrong.

I don't understand this now, and I might not understand it even after I die.

Since time has passed since the incident, the victim is of course now freed from suffering and is spending peaceful time. However, for the victim's father and mother, time may still be stopped (2025.2.5).

👉 Perhaps the answer is already written in Buddhist scriptures, the 👺 Heart Sutra, and the 📓 Bible. I hope to study more after this and find that answer someday (2025.2.14).

❓Like attracts like 👉 It is just like mixing water and oil; water gathers with water, and oil with oil. If you improve yourself, good people will gather around you. The world is a place where things with similar karma gather, and in a broader sense, everything in the universe is like that (P.98).

|Repentance| and eradication of sins

Zen Master Bankei (Bankei Zenji) says,

"If you live with the Buddha-mind, there is no need for repentance or reflection, you will immediately live with the heart of a Buddha. There is nothing better than this."

Mind and body are one

The mind and body are closely related to each other. If you correct your mind, your body will also improve (P.106).

Unborn and undying

Through death, the physical body, which is merely a temporary lodging, perishes (changes and returns), but along with the Buddha that continues at its foundation, that person's karma (like their personality) is cultivated by karma and continues from the past into the present and future. In other words, the Buddha-nature that continues at the root of human |life| is passed on to the future and to subsequent lives while carrying that person's own karma, and life (Buddha-nature + karma) is always kept alive within the Buddha-mind (unborn). (However, when one becomes a Buddha, only the Buddha-nature remains and evil deeds disappear). ➡︎ The meaning of "life" is not the common term for physical life (P.122)

Originally a Buddha, the process of attaining Buddhahood

Buddha-mind is something you already possess—it would be wonderful if you could realize this not just in your head, but in your body. The fact that your true self, your life, merges with the universe, that is, becomes equal to the truth, is called "the completion of an absolute personality." This must be the one and only goal for which we were born as humans. Everyone forgets this, and the mistake of thinking that expedient means for living—such as academics, employment, marriage, etc.—are the purpose of life is where unhappiness is born. Since we have been receiving all kinds of blessings since we were born, we must do everything with a heart of gratitude. The ultimate goal is attaining Buddhahood, and living is the process of attaining Buddhahood (P.133).

Ultimately, you polish yourself, you save yourself, and you can even save others as well (P.137)

True Buddhism depends on how you live this very moment. Gassho (P.140).

Without putting the correct root into it, one tends to get caught up in and infatuated with theoretical and philosophical concepts like 'Form is emptiness, emptiness is form,' and forget these six practices."

• Do not be infatuated with theory and philosophy, but do not forget to keep the Six Practices in mind every day.

• You, too, are derived from the Buddha. Originally, the Buddha exists within you.

• Living with a Buddha's heart every day is the most important thing.

• A good life depends on your mindset.

• If your own mindset is good, good people will naturally gather around you.

• Good causes will naturally be accompanied by good conditions.

• Overcome bad things with joy.

• In the end, all the great people in the world are saying the same thing, or something similar.
