5/9 (Sat) "Beggar of Love" Reading Workshop Session 1
Today was the first session of the "Beggar of Love" online workshop. However, rather than jumping straight into the main text, I focused entirely on giving everyone an overview of the entire "John Silver" series.
This series has classic scenes like
"John Silver is coming!"
"I can hear John Silver's song!"
It is better to understand the prerequisites established from the first installment so that the excitement doesn't feel aimless.
For reference, the order is:
1st: "John Silver" (premiered 1965)
2nd: "John Silver Continued" (premiered 1968)
Extra: "Beggar of Love" (premiered 1970)
3rd: "John Silver After That" (premiered 1971)
That is the sequence.
"John Silver Continued" is sometimes written as "John Silver (Continued)" (in collections), and "Beggar of Love" was billed on posters at its premiere as "John Silver: Beggar of Love Chapter."
It is my view that "Beggar of Love" should be considered an "extra" rather than the third installment. The reason is simple: the protagonist and the era are different from the flow of the others.
The "John Silver" series is consistently about the wife, "Koharu," wandering in search of her husband, "Silver," who has run away from home, but "Koharu" does not appear in "Beggar of Love." She is only mentioned once in the dialogue.
Therefore, "Beggar of Love" has a strong quality as a standalone work,
which has the advantage of being enjoyable on its own.
That said, since it is a series, we started by reading "Kodan Emaki John Silver" from the book "John Silver" published by Tensei Shuppan, in order to get a bird's-eye view of the whole thing.
Reading this allows you to see the episode zero of the series. I also introduced things that were around Kara-san from his childhood, talked about him reading Stevenson's "Treasure Island," and explained the background of how Kara-san became interested in the character "John Silver."
The preparations are complete, and we will enter the main text of "Beggar of Love" starting next week!
