For Those Who Cannot Envision an Ideal Future: 5 Concepts of "Environmental Design" Where Visions Emerge Naturally
Hello. I am Kaoru Okada, Representative of ASOBIZ LLC. I am in charge of reservation management and public relations for
GL Terrace, a rental villa in Chiba Prefecture, and I also promote the appeal of off-site meetings.
Why do "future ideas" not emerge when you are in the office?
"Let's think about the company's future."
"Let's draw up a new vision."
Even if you gather in a meeting room with such enthusiasm, you end up talking only about immediate tasks, and no innovative ideas are born...
Have you ever had that experience?
Human thinking is greatly influenced by the "environment," for better or worse.
The usual desk, the familiar meeting room, the same members.
This fixed environment is optimal for efficiently handling daily tasks, but it can sometimes put the brakes on creative thinking, such as envisioning the future.
In this article, for those who are struggling because their future goals are not set or they cannot envision a team vision, I will introduce the concept of "environmental design" to break out of your thinking framework and allow ideas to emerge naturally, along with five concrete methods.
A vision is not something you "come up with," but something you "discover"
In the first place, a vision is not something you forcibly "squeeze out" from scratch. It is something you naturally "discover" at the intersection of your inner thoughts and passions, and changes in the external environment.
To do this, a "place" to step away from the noise of daily life and clear your thoughts is essential. The environmental design introduced in this article is a switch to intentionally create that "place" and draw out the maximum potential of you and your team.
5 Methods of "Environmental Design" Where an Ideal Future Emerges Automatically
In my own experience operating the rental villa GL Terrace, I have witnessed how many companies undergo dramatic changes through off-site meetings (meetings held in places away from daily life). Based on that experience, I will share five methods that both individuals and teams can practice.
1. Place "a little nature" on your desk: The effects of biophilic design
Even if it is difficult to change your environment significantly all at once, you can start by incorporating a little nature onto your desk. Place a small houseplant, change your PC wallpaper to a photo of a forest or the ocean, or use wooden desk materials.
This is a concept called "biophilic design," and it has been scientifically proven that satisfying the human instinctual desire to "connect with nature" reduces stress and enhances creativity.
2. Stimulate the five senses: Incorporate "sounds, light, and scents" that are different from usual
If you feel your thinking has become rigid, try consciously stimulating your five senses.
Hearing: Listen to music from a different genre than usual, or play natural sounds like the murmuring of a river or birdsong.
Vision: Try using indirect lighting, or take time to gaze at the scenery outside the window.
Sense of smell: Try burning incense or relaxing with the scent of coffee.
By awakening senses you don't usually use, you stimulate your brain in new ways, making it easier to generate fresh ideas.
3. Experience your 'ideal life' firsthand: A short trip to increase the resolution of your future
If you have an ideal, such as 'I want to live in a house like this' or 'I want to work in a place like this,' the most effective thing to do is to place yourself in that environment once. For example, try staying at a hotel with an interior close to your ideal, or a vacation rental like the GL Terrace that we operate.
By spending a day there, your ideal future is no longer just a fantasy, but is input into you as a real physical experience. The quality of your questions themselves should change, such as 'What kind of work would I want to do while looking at this view?' or 'What is truly important in this silence?'
4. Envisioning the future as a team: The 'power of environment' in off-site meetings
Taking the search for an individual vision a step further, off-site meetings are incredibly effective for envisioning the future of a team or organization.off-site meetings.
At the GL Terrace that I operate, Buzzreach Inc. held a GM (General Manager) retreat. Their goal was to 'align medium- to long-term business policies and map out strategies for the future.'

Because they chose an extraordinary space like a seaside vacation rental instead of a conference room, they were able to transcend their usual roles and positions to have essential dialogues. In this way, by borrowing the power of the environment, you can boost your team's creativity all at once.
5. Carry your 'questions' with you: Turning daily life into a field for vision searching
You don't have to go to a special place; just changing your awareness can turn your daily life into a field for vision searching. To do this, it is effective to decide on one 'question,' such as 'What is the best future for me?' or 'If there were no constraints, what would I want to do?', and **always carry it with you**.
While walking, on the train, or taking a break at a cafe. By remembering that question in a sudden moment, the scenery and information you usually overlook will start to jump out at you as hints for the future.
Summary: Change your environment, change your actions, change your future
The reason you can't envision an ideal future is not because you lack ability or passion. In many cases, it is the environment's fault.
Place nature on your desk
Stimulate your five senses
Experience your ideal environment
Dialogue off-site
Carry your 'questions' with you
The five methods introduced here all approach the 'environment.' Please try the one that seems easiest first. Just by changing your environment a little, your thinking will change, your actions will change, and the future itself should change significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. Is there an environment design I can do by myself?
A. Yes. Of the five methods introduced in this article, "1. Place a small piece of nature on your desk," "2. Stimulate your five senses," "3. Experience a simulated ideal lifestyle," and "5. Carry a 'question' with you" can all be practiced alone. I recommend starting by changing the small environment around you.
Q. What are some tips for envisioning a vision during an off-site meeting?
A. Do not pack the agenda too tightly, and value white space time. It is from time that seems unproductive at first glance, such as casual conversation or taking a walk, that creative ideas and honest dialogue are born. The role of facilitation to promote discussion is also important.
Q. Are there ways to do this without spending money?
A. "1. Place nature on your desk (such as decorating with stones or leaves picked up at a park)," "2. Stimulate your five senses (such as opening a window to listen to outside sounds)," and "5. Carry a 'question' with you" can be practiced with almost no cost. First, try starting by changing your mindset and reviewing your daily environment rather than spending money.
