*Let's Respect Each Other*
The other day, I happened to come across a post,
and I felt a sense of discomfort, or rather, a negative emotion,
which left me thinking about it for a while.
The content of that post was a husband
talking about his wife.
"I let her be a stay-at-home mom"
"It's unbelievable that a wife would go to work when her child is sick"
Looking at this text, some people might agree with it,
and others might wonder what is wrong with it.
However, the "negative emotion" I felt,
taking the surrounding text into account as well,
was that the phrasing the husband used when talking about his own wife
was incredibly disrespectful.It was
the way he spoke as if his wife were his own propertythat
really bothered me.
"Family" and "property" are obviously different.
Everyone has their own way of thinking,
which is precisely why they are "other people" different from oneself.
Furthermore,
I am not married to that person,
so one could say it has nothing to do with me.
But you know, even to that husband, his wife is
fundamentally an "other person" and not himself.
That goes without saying.
Even if they became a "family,"
she did not become his property.
To add one more thing,
since they have become one "family,"
it is perfectly fine for the husband, who is also a member of the family,
to take care of the child, who is also a member of the family.
For example, if this couple had made a contract when they married that:
- The wife will be a stay-at-home mom
- The wife will always stay with the child when they are unwell
then I think the husband would be right to be angry if she broke it.
Because that would be a breach of contract.
But they probably didn't have such a contract.
Among so-called developed countries,
I wonder if Japan is the only one where this mindset is so far behind...
That said,
I personally believe that even when people talk about gender equality,
it is a fact that men and women cannot be exactly the same.
There are things men are good at, things only men can do,
things women are good at, and things only women can do,
right?
But if you take a step back and look at it more broadly,
"things that only that person can do"are something that every individual has.
Being male, female, a husband, or a wife
is not really that important.
Isn't it just a matter of each person recognizing what they can and cannot do,
and helping each other out?
Respecting each other.
For that, I think we need discussion,
we need compromise,
and we need consideration.
No one is anyone's possession,
and I want a world where it is natural
for individuals to live as their own 'selves'.
As I have written before,
people are not meant to be perfectly round,
and it is natural to have rough edges.
It is precisely because of these rough edges that we are beautiful.
Instead of looking down on the gaps, I want a world where the protrusions grow while
we complement each other's gaps.
No one is anyone's possession, and
each person is precious as their own 'self'.
Even with those close to me, I want to always remember that
and keep a feeling of respect
for the other person.
