How to Have a Healthy Relationship with Social Media
Good evening, this is ☺ (Kao).
Are you the type of person who likes to brag?
Honestly, I am the type who likes to brag (lol).
Because I worked hard! I want people to tell me I did a good job! That's the desire. Why did I walk toward that goal? Even if it was just for my own sake, if I achieve something, I want to be praised.
It's what you call a need for validation.
Usually, I tell my parents or close friends and get them to praise me (lol).
These days, I feel that trying to make oneself look bigger like that is what leads to judging things only by their surface.
You can listen to a friend honestly, right?
It's genuinely nice to hear about a friend's success. At the same time, when they are sad, I feel sad too.
Passing an exam, getting married, having a child.
If it's a truly close friend, I think the feeling of 'I'm so happy for you' comes before any feelings of envy.
Though, you might feel envious afterward and think, 'Why am I...'
But, the moment you hear it, there's no one who thinks, 'Why did you pass!' or 'It's impossible that you got married before me!', right?
However, suddenly, when it comes to reports from people you aren't close to, I often see people becoming aggressive.
When it's a stranger, you suddenly get aggressive, right?
Especially on celebrities' social media or viral posts.
If you read the comment section, it's often full of heartless remarks. Furthermore, supporters and anti-fans end up fighting each other.
Just reading it from the sidelines, I think 'how interesting,' but I imagine the person who posted it must feel terrible.
Even though they just posted a shot of their happy wedding...
Even though they just wanted to share a fun trip...
Even though they just went to a high-end restaurant...
'That dress doesn't suit you,' or 'Are you doing sugar dating because you always have luxurious trips?', or 'You can't even taste the food anyway, so going there is a joke.'
*These aren't real comments, but things that the social media monsters created by my imagination might write.
Why can you say such things to a stranger!
That's what I think.
If you think about the effort and the background, you can be kinder.
If you are dissatisfied with a stranger's bragging or showing off, you should just unfollow or mute them.
Because they might have worked incredibly hard on a diet to wear that dress. They might have been saving money behind the scenes to take that luxurious trip. They might have had a nice meal to celebrate a friend. If you imagine that effort and background, you can't say such things, right?
Well, even if they didn't put in the effort and got money through sugar dating, if that person and their partner are happy, isn't that fine? (lol)
I wouldn't do it, and I despise it, but I wouldn't go and tell them that.
Making critical comments publicly to someone who is old enough to be responsible for their own life is what you call 'none of your business.'
Surely, there must be parents or friends who will criticize them for real.
Don't forget that social media is just a cropped snippet.
What I am writing in this Note is also just a part of me.
It might be easy and interesting to read an article and imagine what kind of person I am, but the article is not all of me. It's just a part of my thoughts.
That is precisely why I would be sad if I received anti-style comments (I never have! You are all kind!), and I am careful myself not to make comments that could be taken as anti-style!
I think having a healthy relationship with social media is a very important topic.
