The Misaligned Reward Design of a Brain That 'Works Hard but Feels Unfulfilled'
"I'm working so hard, so why don't I feel fulfilled?"
In work, in relationships, and in daily life.
You are doing what you should be doing.
In fact, you are putting in more effort than others.
And yet,
There is no sense of achievement.
The feeling of satisfaction doesn't last.
There is always a lingering sense of 'not enough'.
This state is not a matter of willpower or grit—
it is possible that your brain's 'reward design' is misaligned.
■ The brain is driven by 'rewards'
Most human behavior is determined by 'rewards'.
・Being praised
・Being recognized
・Receiving a positive reaction
When you have these experiences, your brain decides to 'do it again'.
Conversely,
If you cannot feel a reward no matter how hard you try,
your brain decides that 'it is meaningless'.
This is where the problem arises.
People who 'work hard but feel unfulfilled'
have a misalignment in how they receive these rewards.
■ Misalignment 1: Relying on 'external evaluation'
A common pattern is,
using 'others' evaluations' as a reward
instead of 'your own satisfaction'.
・It's okay if I'm recognized
・I'll be fulfilled if I'm praised
・It's meaningless if there is no reaction
With this design,
no matter how hard you work,
your level of satisfaction is determined by others.
In other words,
You are in a state where you do not have
control over your rewards.
■ Misalignment ②: The 'Standard for Achievement' is too high
Another factor is
that the 'achievement bar is set too high'.
・Still not enough
・This isn't good enough
・I should be able to do more
In this way, no matter how much you accomplish,
it is processed as 'unachieved'.
To use an analogy,
it is like a marathon where the finish line keeps moving forward.
No matter how much you run,
you never reach the goal.
With this, there is no way you can feel fulfilled.
■ Misalignment ③: Moving on before feeling it
Actually, this is the most common one.
The moment you achieve something,
・The next task
・The next goal
・The next anxiety
your consciousness shifts to these.
In other words,
you are 'moving on before receiving the reward'.
The brain needs time to properly process
the feeling of having 'achieved' something.
If you skip that,
no matter how many results you have,
you will feel as if they never happened.
■ 'Reward misalignment' differs by trait
When viewed through the 3-Layer Trait Activation Method (Create, Passion, Harmony, Discipline, Sensitivity), there are distinct characteristics in how this misalignment occurs.
The 'Passion' type has a strong goal orientation, so they move on to the next thing immediately after achieving one.
As a result, they keep running before they can feel satisfied.
The 'Discipline' type tends to have high standards.
Their focus is on 'doing it correctly,' which raises the bar for evaluating themselves.
The 'Harmony' type tends to rely on external evaluation.
They are fine if those around them are satisfied, but if the reaction is weak, they suddenly feel unfulfilled.
The 'Sensitivity' type has large emotional swings.
Even if they feel satisfied for a moment, they are quickly pulled back into anxiety or a sense of lack.
The 'Create' type has high ideals and tends to have a sense that 'I could actually do more.'
As a result, it is difficult for them to evaluate their current achievements.
■ People who feel fulfilled have a different 'design'
So, what is different about people who feel fulfilled?
It is that
their 'reward design' is internal.
・They recognize their own achievements
・They count even small progress
・They intentionally feel that 'it was good'
In other words,
they have a habit of 'going to receive' rewards.
■ For example, this kind of difference
Even with the same event of 'finishing a job,'
those who are unfulfilled see it as,
'there are still tasks remaining.'
those who are fulfilled see it as,
'I have finished this much.'
Even if the reality is the same,
the brain's processing is different.
■ 'Feeling unfulfilled' is not a problem of ability
What is important here is that
the reason you feel unfulfilled is not because you are not working hard enough.
In fact, it is the opposite,
the more capable you are of working hard, the easier it is to fall into this state.
This is because,
the more you are able to put in effort, the more you continue to seek what comes next.
■ Small redesigns you can start today
Reward design can be changed little by little.
Simple is fine.
・Write down three things you 'accomplished' at the end of the day. ・Give yourself approval based on your own standards, not someone else's evaluation. ・When you achieve something, stop for just five seconds and feel it.
This 'five seconds' is surprisingly important.
It becomes the time for your brain to recognize that 'this is a reward'.
■ Summary
The reason you feel unfulfilled is
not because you lack effort, but because your way of receiving rewards is misaligned.
And that misalignment,
can be corrected with a little awareness.
There is no need to stop working hard.
However,
do not forget to 'receive'.
Just by doing that,
the way you perceive even the same daily routine will change significantly.
