The Day AI, Which I Thought Had Nothing to Do With Me, Felt a Little Closer — Changes Seen Through Someone Close Starting to Use It —
■ AI was a distant existence
A Friday night after work.
In the slightly tired atmosphere,
I was having a casual conversation with my husband.
“Don't you use AI at work?”
When I asked casually, my husband paused for a moment and said this.
“The environment to use it exists, but...
That thing lies, doesn't it? So I don't use it.”
Honestly, that reaction was within my expectations.
“Ah, you mean hallucinations.” I said, and he replied,
“What's a hallucination?”
“It's when AI says something that sounds plausible with total confidence... I guess. It's decreased quite a bit lately, though.”
AI seems convenient, but somehow I can't fully trust it.
It still has nothing to do with me.
That kind of distance.
■ The trigger was from a “personal matter”
Even so, I tried talking about it a little bit.
That I receive AI news automatically every morning.
That when I shared how to do that within the company, there was a bit of a response.
Then my husband suddenly looked up and said,
“Can that also pull up news about the logistics industry?”
He had a look of curiosity that was somewhat surprising.
"You can do it. Want to try?"
When I asked that, the reply I got was
"I want to do it right now."
That was the only word.
From there, it was fast.
While looking at the screen together side-by-side, we installed the ChatGPT app and set it up.
It was much easier than I had thought.
We created a "system where industry news arrives every morning" right there on the spot.
■ The distance between words is also gradually closing
AI has a lot of terms that are a bit difficult for beginners, doesn't it?
"What is a prompt?"they asked, and
"It's the instructions you give to the AI."I explained simply.
Since I have been studying for the Generative AI Passport and IT Passport exams, they have started asking me various things about AI recently.
I feel like the distance between our words has been closing little by little like this.
■ The night "dislike" turned into "fun"
It was on another night that I clearly felt that change.
"AI is amazing."
My husband spoke to me, sounding a bit excited.
The deadline for the article to be included in the company newsletter had passed, and
it seemed like they were struggling with what to write.
“I’m not good at writing these kinds of short column-style pieces.”
They said that with a slightly troubled look on their face.
Seeing that expression, I realized they were a bit stuck.
If they were going to write something, they wanted to write about what they liked.
Things like the sports they continue as a hobby, or stories about what they’ve been into lately.
As an experiment, when my husband asked ChatGPT—which he calls “Chappy”—it apparently shaped up both the headline and the body text in no time.
“I was surprised by what it said.”
What he showed me when he said that
was a kind remark added at the very end.
It wasn’t just giving an answer,
but words that felt like they were slightly empathizing with his feelings.
“Lately, Chappy has been getting a bit too familiar.”
My husband said that and laughed a little.
When I peeked at the screen, there was a conversation that felt somehow close.
■ AI becomes a “partner to think with”
At that moment, I suddenly thought.
Maybe AI isn’t about giving amazing answers,
but rather a “presence that thinks along with you.”
You don’t have to force yourself to master it,
and you don’t have to know the correct way to use it.
Just,
asking it one question like,
“How should I write this?”
I felt that just by doing that, the distance can sometimes shrink a little.
Even though I was so skeptical at first, seeing him talk happily after finding a partner he could easily consult with was like looking at my former self.
■ Summary
AI isn't something that changes everything like magic, but it is a presence that lowers the hurdle for thinking just a little bit.
With that kind of distance,
I feel like I can get along with it without forcing anything.
■ Postscript
“I don't know what to ask.”
Starting from that state,
I've compiled the initial settings and ways to organize things that I tried together with my husband, who was an AI beginner, in this article🌱
・How to adjust when the conversation goes off track
・Settings to receive news every morning
・Tips for getting closer to AI
and more,
are summarized here along with a PDF including screenshots.👇
🌱 Today's Step
You don't have to try to use it well.
Just asking one question like, “How should I write this?” is enough.
What would you ask?
