[Project Participation] How I started interacting with AI when I 'didn't know what to ask' | Answering 10 questions from ChatGPT

"I don't know what to ask"

That was the first barrier between me and AI.

Recently, I came across a post project by Yu Yanagi called "Responding to Questions from AI."

It's a project where you write an article by having an AI throw questions at you and then answering them.

When I tried it, more of "my current self" came out than I had expected.

How I interact with AI | It started with a small word

I didn't master AI for work from the very beginning.

If anything, the feelings of "it seems difficult" and "maybe it's too early for me" were stronger.

Today, I would like to answer these 10 questions from ChatGPT one by one.

I used the prompt to create the questions from Yu Yanagi's article.

🔷Theme: 'Reflection Note for AI Beginners'

Q1. What was the trigger for your interest in AI? What kind of image did you have of it at first?

I started using it with image generation.

Since I can't draw illustrations myself, I was truly surprised that illustrations would appear just by describing them in text.

However, at that time, the image that "it seems difficult to use for work" was still strong.

AI looked more like something that "amazing people use."

Q2. When you actually used ChatGPT, were there any moments where you felt stuck or found it difficult?

With image generation, about a year and a half ago, there were many times when the output didn't turn out as I had imagined.

With the free version, there were usage limits, so I couldn't really experiment as much as I wanted to.

Even at work, I couldn't visualize how to use it on the front lines, so I ended up stuck.

Q3. People who feel uncomfortable with AI often get stuck because they don't know what to ask. How did you start using it at first?

At first, I read a lot of books about AI and attended seminars.

Through that, I learned that "personas" and "prompts" are important.

However, I didn't get it right from the start.

It felt like I was gradually adjusting the persona that suited me and the distance that made it easy to talk.

Q4. Rather than thinking "AI is amazing," have you ever felt that it "helped a little"?

At first, it was really about things close to home.

I tried asking it to look things up or had it help me plan a trip.

Rather than "it changed my life!," it was more like
“it made things a little easier.”

It was an accumulation of those feelings.

Q5. Have you ever felt that "relying too much on AI is not quite right"?

The text that AI produces is very easy to read and polite.

But, nothing remains after reading it.

That feeling has always bothered me.

That is why I always make sure to add my own words and warmth at the end.

Even for things like organizing data, AI is just "someone who organizes for me."

I believe the final check is still a human's job.

Q6. What is the most natural way you use AI right now?

For me, AI is close to a "consultant."

At work, I ask it how to deal with PC errors, or get help when I'm stuck on an email reply.

In my daily life, I sometimes use it to sort out worries I can't immediately tell my family.

As I talk to the AI, I feel like my own feelings get sorted out, like "What do I really want to do?"

After that, when I talk to my family, I can have a calm conversation without getting emotional.

AI might be more of a "presence that organizes your thoughts" rather than something that gives you answers.

Q7. Since you started learning AI in your 50s, have you felt that "you don't have to do it the same way as young people"?

I have.

When scrutinizing what AI outputs, my life experience to date has been useful.

That is why I realized it is only natural that I don't use it the same way young people do.

Conversely, I have increasingly found myself in the position of teaching others at work.

I feel that there are things you can see precisely because you have gained experience over the years.

Q8. What kind of concerns do AI beginners consult you about?

'It seems difficult, and I can't take the first step.'

I hear this really often.

Also, many people say, 'I don't know what to ask.'

I was the same way at first.

I feel that many people get stuck, especially when it comes to personas and prompt settings.

That is why I make it a point to tell them, 'It's okay to start with simple conversation.'

Q9. What kind of presence is AI to me?

To me, AI is a 'partner.'

Now, I also use it as a sounding board to organize my thoughts for writing notes and publishing on Kindle.

I wasn't able to use it this naturally from the very beginning.

However, I feel that as we continued to converse little by little, our sense of closeness grew.

Q10. If you could say just one thing to someone who is curious about AI but feels afraid, what would it be?

First, try having a conversation with AI, even if it's just a simple sentence.

I use AI like it's 'another version of myself'.

I talk through what's on my mind, like a sounding board.

If you can think, 'Conversing might actually be fun' from that, then you've already taken the first step.

■ Conclusion

AI isn't something that solves everything like magic.

But if you use it well, it can help organize your feelings a little or support your thinking process.

For me, that's what it has been.

That's why even now, rather than 'mastering' it, I might still be 'in the process of developing how to interact with it'.

Actually, I am currently working little by little on a Kindle book with the theme of 'How to interact with AI'.

Rather than a guide on how to master AI, it's about 'how I found my own sense of distance, starting from not knowing what to ask'.

I hope to leave it as a realistic record of a 50-something office worker.

🌱 Today's Step

Try saying something like, 'I'm a bit tired today' to an AI.

You don't have to worry about asking the perfect question.

As you continue the conversation, you might gradually see your own 'sense of distance' emerge.
