The reason I started this activity.
Once again, I am Yuki Kaku, the 'Savior of Picky-Eating Moms'.
I am a registered dietitian specializing in picky-eating kids,
and I am active as a baby food advisor, toddler food advisor, and senior health and dietary education master.
My goal is to bea family registered dietitian for children and moms!
I have set that as a somewhat big goal ^^
I digressed a bit, but I created these 10 steps based on my own experience of struggling with picky eating and the knowledge I gained through trial and error in improving my children's picky eating.
Picky eating cannot be improved overnight.
That is precisely why
it is important to proceed at the pace of the child and the mom without overdoing it.
I have two sons.
My eldest son has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with intellectual disabilities,
and my second son is in the ASD gray zone (for now).
In other words, I am a mother of two neurodivergent kids.
I was a picky eater myself as a child, and my sons are also quite picky eaters!
Moreover, they have different preferences, so preparing meals is a struggle.
Because I was a picky eater myself, I can imagine to some extent why they don't eat,
and I understand the reasons for not eating,
but if they keep not eating, I still worry about nutritional imbalances!
How should I balance the nutrition for both of them...
I think about it like a puzzle every day and manage it.
I am doing this activity because I want to support moms who are struggling in the same way.
As for the original trigger, at the developmental support center my eldest son attended before entering kindergarten,
I could consult with many specialists,
but there was no nutritional consultation available with a dietitian.
However, when talking with other moms,
mealtime worries always come up!You can receive nutritional consultations at infant health checkups, but even if you consult about picky eating that involves developmental characteristics,
my impression is that it often ends with safe, generic answers.
When becoming a dietitian, we study a little about child development,
but we don't study developmental disabilities.
(I wonder if they study it a little now?)
I am a registered dietitian and a mother raising a child with special needs.
I want to create a place where 'picky eating improvement that considers developmental characteristics' can be done.Since there is an aspect where developmental characteristics are not related to picky eating,
I want to be a strength for moms who are worried about picky eating, regardless of whether their child has developmental characteristics or not.
I carefully nurtured this thought for about two years and proceeded with preparations,
(as a period of relearning, I acquired qualifications as a baby food advisor, toddler food advisor, and senior health and dietary education master)
and started my activities.
I have held children's meal consultation sessions at nearby community spaces,
served as a lecturer for children's meal consultation sessions in Kusatsu City,
and started operating an online community where parents of neurodivergent kids gather,
which brings me to the present.
Since my younger child is not yet in kindergarten,
my activities are within a really limited time,
but there are many people who support me, so I am able to do my best!
At children's meal consultation sessions,
there are many worries about how to proceed during the baby food period,
but from around the time they turn 1 year old, there are an overwhelming number of worries about 'they have become picky'.
In other words, everyone is that worried and concerned about nutritional imbalances.
That is why I am dedicated to activities focused on improving picky eating!
Let's make meals delicious and fun!
“Why won't you eat it...”
Even though I thought hard and made it, wondering, “Maybe they'll eat this?”
they didn't take a single bite.
Have you ever felt like your heart was breaking?
I don't know why they won't eat,
I don't know what to do, and I feel helpless.
I'm worried about nutritional imbalances, what if they don't grow properly?
When days like that continue, frustration builds up,
and mealtime becomes a source of stress, doesn't it?
But wait a minute.
Trying too hard to force improvements,
only for both mom and child to end up exhausted, is counterproductive.
To enjoy mealtime,
why not try a method that will put your mind at ease?
You don't have to worry about improving picky eating alone.
There are days when they won't eat.
But that doesn't last forever.
An approach tailored to your child's growth and personality
will lighten your heart.
I am currently facing the picky eating habits of my own sons.
Even if they happily ate it yesterday,
they might suddenly stop eating it today...
They are sensitive and delicate enough to notice even the slightest differences.
The reason they stop eating can be just that small.
But the reason they start eating might be just as small!
I want to support you with advicebased on such real-life experiences,
to help ease your worries.
Won't you join me in supporting your child's picky eating?
I will help you do your best without overdoing it!
Now, first, why not take the first step toward
“facing your child's picky eating with confidence”?
