What is common to all "expression" activities
Depending on the shading, the degree of bleeding, the direction of the paint, the touch, etc., "practicing three-dimensional and realistic copying (expressing depth and center of gravity)" is also necessary as study... and... (no, at this point the teacher is... you know...),
Using a photo I took a while ago of a "single flower in a vase on a table 🌹" as a subject...↓

...I am doing this↓ now as well.

I started it as a study piece, but as it came together, I thought, maybe there is a demand for this? ...so I decided to frame it properly and include it in the May exhibition↓ along with my other abstract works.
According to the teacher, this gallery is a venue where "actually, abstract painting exhibitions are rarer".
So this time,
"relatively easy-on-the-eyes, soft-touch abstract paintings"
were selected, and in addition to that, we decided to go with the policy of
experimentally exhibiting one small figurative painting per person as well.
...that is the policy we decided on.
Figurative painting... it was my first attempt... but I was able to do it without being too nervous.
I suppose you go through this first at art school, but my teacher does it in reverse, the order in which he makes us do things.
It seems the teacher has his own beliefs about that...
There is a part in a past article where I wrote this↓...

To supplement the content enclosed in pink a little, the teacher's view is...
Whether it is a figurative painting or an abstract painting, the "mind's eye" must be cleared, and "observing well" is more important than anything else. If you think from a deep place that you want to reproduce (embody) what you have captured with your mind's eye, the necessary techniques (means) will follow later. What should be trained first is the "mind's eye".
...is what he would say.
(The teacher's comment: "Actually, that was proven this time," "What you have cultivated so far is being put to use.")
In other words, do not start with "technique".
...I feel like I understand this...
During my Spartan music college days, I was constantly pushed to chase things like "playing technically demanding passages without mistakes" or "getting my fingers to move even faster," and what should have been "music" turned into a "finger sport," which led to me hating the piano by the time I graduated. (I lost sight of why I was even playing...)music.)
It wasn't until I took a few years off from the piano and then returned to performing that I experienced firsthand the "blissful joy of having feelings conveyed to the listener, leading to resonance, empathy, and sharing that occurs from deep within," and truly realized the "true thrill of expression.""
Even now, I sometimes hear performances that are "mechanically accurate and impressive, but not moving (they don't strike a chord)," and I personally strive to ensure my students don't end up that way, by using the piano as a bridge to teach the "heart of expression."
(Note: I am not saying that "technique is unnecessary." ⚠)
My art teacher is also very thorough about ensuring that our creative works do not become "paintings that are just skillful (but lack something essential) and have no depth."
…So then, that…
What is that "something essential"?
What does it mean to "see with the 'eye of the heart'"?
When does "resonance" occur?
What is "expression" ultimately?
…is what it comes down to, but…
That is… something I will save for another time. This core part is the most difficult to put into words… No, actually, it is the simplest thing, but… the more simple something is, the harder it is to pin down in a single word.
It's that thing that cannot be put into words… or rather, it's that thing that loses its magic when you try to put it into words… You know, that thing… (Well, that's why I express it through means other than language.)
…Excuse me. I've digressed quite a bit and gone on for a long time, but the final push… this is where the real work begins, so I will keep doing my best.
