How 'Time Away from the Charts' Saved Me in FX: Escaping Market Addiction and Regaining Calm Judgment
It's Kaerun here 🐸
When I first started FX, I was glued to the charts all the time. I felt like if I just kept watching them, I would find the answer. However, my trading performance was anything but stable back then. I'd buy thinking it would go up, only for it to drop, or it would rise right after I bailed... Every day was a series of 'what-ifs'.
What I realized was that 'sometimes, if you look too much, you stop seeing things clearly.' When you watch the market constantly, your heart inevitably gets swayed by temporary movements. You might panic-enter because it's rising, or get anxious over a slight dip and close your position. None of these were actions born from calm judgment.
Before I knew it, I had become addicted to the market. I'd check the charts the moment I woke up, look at my phone while eating, and there were nights I couldn't sleep because I was worried. But when you're being tossed around by the market like that, you lose sight of how you should really be judging things and what your stance should be.
One day, I decided to take the plunge and create time where I wouldn't look at the charts. At first, I felt restless and fidgety. But as time passed, I felt a sense of calm returning to me. By having time to ask myself, 'What am I looking at right now, and how do I feel?', it became easier to organize information, and I feel like I started to see the market more like a 'landscape'.
Of course, as a trader, charts are important. But not looking at them too much is just as important. There are many things you can only notice by keeping your distance. Even now, I make a conscious effort to incorporate my own 'time away.' Sipping tea, doing some stretches, or even worrying about my waistline (lol)—those moments are actually what improve the precision of my trading.
FX is a world where your judgment is constantly tested. But that judgment isn't necessarily honed by being glued to the screen. Create a little space between yourself and the market. Just doing that should change how you approach trading. I hope you'll try taking some 'time away' for yourself, too.
