The Pitfalls of Over-Analyzing the Market in FX: Preconceptions, Lack of Flexibility, and Overconfidence

It's Kaerun here 🐸
When I quit my office job to become a full-time FX trader, I was desperate to "predict the market" and "fully read the future." I would stare at charts for hours, fill up analysis notebooks, and try to perfectly forecast the next move. But the result was just more losses, and I was mentally exhausted. Looking back now, I realize that over-analyzing the market was what was holding me back.

When you over-analyze the market, you inevitably bring in preconceptions. You end up deciding, "It should move like this" or "This pattern is a winner." I have a laid-back personality, but I can be surprisingly stubborn, and once I decided "this is it," my perspective would narrow. The market is like a living thing that keeps changing, yet I would cling to my own analysis and miss the signs of change time and time again.

And what's scary is overconfidence. When an analysis has worked in the past, you gain confidence that "it should be the same this time." But the market shows a different face every time. I've failed many times by betting large lots, thinking, "I've thought this through, so it'll be fine." Each time, I felt keenly that I still have a long way to go. I think it's truly important to accept that FX is something that doesn't always move the way you want it to.

What I learned from that is the importance of flexibility. While it's difficult to predict the market perfectly, you can feel the flow and follow it honestly. By having the habit of asking myself, "Hmm, has the atmosphere changed a little?" or "Let's wait and see here," I was able to reduce unnecessary losses. Just like how I, who am a bit conscious of my weight (lol), think "Do I really want to eat this right now?" before picking up a snack, I think it's important to pause and re-evaluate your actions.

If you are currently tired from trying to "fully read" the market, please take a moment to re-examine whether you have any preconceptions, whether you are being overconfident, and whether you are acting flexibly. I believe that FX is not about manipulating the market, but about riding its flow. Let's grow together without rushing and while taking care of ourselves.
